KAR files are karaoke MIDI files, but many phones, car stereos, and audio editors accept only recorded audio such as MP3. Converting one requires rendering its MIDI notes through instrument sounds; it does not extract an existing vocal recording.
What the KAR format is
KAR is a karaoke variant of the MIDI format. It stores musical note events, tempo, instrument assignments, and usually synchronized lyrics or karaoke text; it normally contains no recorded audio.
Karaoke and MIDI software creates or plays KAR files, including vanBasco's Karaoke Player, KaraFun, and other karaoke sequencers. You may encounter them when downloading backing tracks, opening older MIDI song libraries, or moving karaoke files to a device that cannot read MIDI-based formats.
What the MP3 format is
MP3 is a compressed audio format supported by phones, car systems, media players, podcast tools, and most audio editors. It stores rendered sound rather than note events, so it is suitable for playback and sharing but cannot retain the editable MIDI arrangement.
MP3 files are much smaller than uncompressed WAV files. Common music settings are 192 or 256 kbps constant or variable bitrate; higher bitrates preserve more detail but do not restore information absent from the KAR rendering.
How to convert KAR to MP3
Using MuseScore
- Install MuseScore and open the
.karfile through File → Open. If the program rejects the extension, make a copy and rename only the copy to.mid, then open it; KAR is MIDI-based, but the renamed file must still contain valid MIDI data. - Check the imported notes, tempo, instruments, and lyrics. Select an appropriate playback sound if MuseScore assigns an unsuitable instrument.
- Use File → Export, select
MP3as the format, choose the destination and quality settings, and export. If the installed MuseScore version offers only WAV, export WAV first and encode that file as MP3 with an audio encoder. - Play the result in a normal media player and check the start, ending, tempo, and loudest passages before deleting the source.
Using the built-in online converter
On 101convert.com, select the KAR-to-MP3 converter, upload the .kar file, choose MP3 and the available quality setting, then start the conversion and download the result. This option requires no software installation. Do not upload copyrighted or private material unless the service's handling terms are acceptable.
Using a command line workflow
TiMidity++ can render the MIDI data to a WAV file when installed with a SoundFont or instrument configuration:
timidity song.kar -Ow -o song.wav
Encode the rendered WAV with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i song.wav -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k song.mp3
The exact TiMidity++ sound depends on its configured MIDI instruments. This workflow renders accompaniment and synthesized parts; it does not turn lyric text into sung vocals.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
A KAR file is not an audio recording, so the conversion can sound different across programs, SoundFonts, synthesizers, and drum maps. Select the sound set before exporting if the arrangement depends on a particular piano, guitar, or drum sound.
Lyrics stored in KAR are normally display data. They may appear during playback in karaoke software but are not audible in the MP3, and MP3 is not a reliable container for synchronized karaoke lyrics. If timed lyrics are required, retain the original KAR file or create a separate lyric file supported by the target player.
Rendering to WAV before MP3 avoids unnecessary intermediate lossy encoding and makes it easier to inspect the audio. Keep the original KAR because MP3 cannot preserve editable notes, tempo events, instrument changes, or the original lyric timing.
