A WMA file contains recorded audio, while an MXL file contains compressed MusicXML notation. You need this conversion when a notation program requires an MXL score, but producing one requires musical transcription rather than a normal audio-format change.

What the WMA format is

WMA, or Windows Media Audio, is a Microsoft audio format used for music, voice recordings, and media distributed through Windows applications. Windows Media Player and older Microsoft audio tools commonly create or play WMA files; audio extracted from older downloads, recordings, and Windows-based archives may also use it. WMA stores sound samples, not individual notes, pitches, measures, or instrument parts.

What the MXL format is

MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an interchange format for digital sheet music. Notation programs such as MuseScore, Finale, and Sibelius can use MusicXML data to represent notes, rhythms, clefs, key signatures, dynamics, lyrics, and instruments. MXL is useful for editing, transposing, printing, and moving a score between notation applications, but it does not contain playable audio in the way WMA does.

How to actually convert WMA to MXL

A direct codec conversion cannot produce a correct score because the source has sound but no explicit notation. Use this workflow:

  1. Decode the WMA file to an uncompressed format. With FFmpeg, run ffmpeg -i input.wma -ar 44100 -ac 1 input.wav. Stereo is preferable for recordings containing separate spatial parts; mono can simplify some speech or single-instrument transcription.
  2. Transcribe input.wav with an audio-to-MIDI or audio-to-score application, or enter the notes manually in MuseScore. Audio transcription works best with one clearly recorded melodic instrument; chords, drums, reverberation, polyphonic recordings, and multiple instruments usually require substantial correction.
  3. Open the resulting MIDI or manually created score in MuseScore and correct tempo, meter, pitches, durations, voices, rests, tuplets, ties, lyrics, and instrument assignments. MIDI import often guesses notation values incorrectly.
  4. In MuseScore, choose File → Export, select MusicXML Compressed (*.mxl), and save the result as output.mxl. If the application offers only uncompressed MusicXML, export .musicxml first and use a notation program that supports compressed MusicXML export.

You can also check the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. A service that only changes the filename or container cannot turn WMA audio into meaningful notation; use it only if it specifically provides audio transcription or confirms that the WMA-to-MXL conversion is supported.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The WMA recording's audio quality affects transcription accuracy, but converting it to WAV does not restore information lost through WMA compression. MXL compatibility can vary between notation programs because MusicXML features, fonts, playback settings, and layout instructions are interpreted differently. Keep the original WMA and the editable score source, such as .mscz, because MXL is intended for interchange and may not preserve every application's layout detail.
