Free online AAC to MXL converter

Music notation software may require an .mxl file, while the source recording is often an .aac audio file from a phone, iTunes, or a streaming export. AAC cannot be directly converted into valid MXL because MXL stores written musical notation rather than recorded sound; the audio must first be transcribed.

What the AAC format is

AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, is a lossy audio format used for music, podcasts, voice recordings, and video soundtracks. Apple Music and iTunes commonly create AAC files with the .m4a extension, while some applications save raw AAC streams with the .aac extension. Phones, media players, video editors, and audio encoders frequently encounter this format.

An AAC file contains encoded audio samples. It does not contain note names, durations, rests, key signatures, time signatures, instrument assignments, or other notation data needed by MXL.

What the MXL format is

MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an interchange format for sheet music. It is used by notation programs such as MuseScore, Finale, Sibelius, and Dorico to exchange scores containing notes, rhythms, lyrics, dynamics, articulations, staves, and layout information.

An MXL file is normally a ZIP-based package containing one or more MusicXML files and metadata. It is suitable for editing and sharing notation, but it cannot store an audio recording as a playable score. Renaming .aac to .mxl, or placing the AAC file inside a ZIP archive, does not create a valid MusicXML document.

How to actually convert AAC to MXL

1. Decode the AAC recording to an analysis-friendly audio file. FFmpeg can create a WAV copy without adding another lossy compression stage:
   ffmpeg -i input.aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 working.wav
   For a mono voice or solo instrument, -ac 1 can simplify later analysis.
2. Transcribe the audio to MIDI or notation. Use an audio-to-MIDI or audio-to-score application that matches the recording. Tools such as Basic Pitch, Melodyne, ScoreCloud, or similar transcription software can detect pitches and note timing, but the result normally requires manual correction. Basic Pitch, for example, can generate MIDI from suitable monophonic or relatively clear recordings; it does not produce a finished MXL score directly.
3. Open the MIDI in a notation editor. In MuseScore, use File → Open to import the MIDI file, then correct the tempo, meter, quantization, tuplets, rests, octave placement, voices, lyrics, and instruments. Audio transcription cannot reliably determine all of these details from sound alone.
4. Save as compressed MusicXML. In MuseScore, use File → Save As, choose MusicXML Compressed (*.mxl), and save the result. In other notation programs, use their MusicXML export command and select the compressed MXL option if available.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This is a transcription rather than a format-only conversion, so the output is an interpretation of the recording. Clear solo melodies generally convert better than dense orchestral, piano, drum, reverberant, or heavily compressed material. Chords, overlapping voices, percussion, expressive timing, ornamentation, and background noise commonly produce incorrect notes or rhythms.

Exporting AAC to WAV does not restore information removed by AAC compression. Use the original lossless recording when available. MIDI also does not preserve the exact sound of the AAC recording; it stores performance events that the notation program turns into written music.

Before sharing the MXL file, open it in the target notation program and verify that all staves, lyrics, accidentals, tempo changes, and page layout survived import. Some applications support only portions of the MusicXML specification, so an MXL file may display differently across programs.
