What the FLAC format is
FLAC, or Free Lossless Audio Codec, compresses PCM audio without discarding information. It is commonly created when CDs or WAV recordings are archived, when musicians record and exchange high-quality takes, and when audio is exported from programs such as Audacity, ffmpeg, fre:ac, and many digital audio workstations. Media players can decode FLAC, but the file contains a waveform rather than symbolic information such as pitch names, note lengths, key signatures, or staff positions.
What the MXL format is
MXL is the compressed form of MusicXML, an XML-based interchange format for sheet music. Notation programs such as MuseScore, Finale, and Sibelius use MusicXML or MXL to exchange scores, including notes, rests, lyrics, articulations, instruments, and layout data. MXL is much smaller than an uncompressed .musicxml file and is suitable for moving an editable score between notation applications, but it is not an audio format and cannot store the original FLAC waveform.
How to actually convert FLAC to MXL
Use a two-stage workflow: transcribe the recording to MIDI, then open and correct the MIDI in notation software before exporting compressed MusicXML.
- Prepare the audio. Trim silence and use a clean recording with one clearly audible melody or instrument. Polyphonic mixes, drums, reverb, and changing tempos reduce transcription accuracy.
- Generate MIDI. Spotify Basic Pitch is a suitable desktop or command-line option for automatic pitch transcription. After installing it, run
basic-pitch output_folder recording.flac. The output normally includes a MIDI file and, depending on the version, additional transcription data. - Open the MIDI in MuseScore. Choose File → Open, select the generated
.midfile, and set the correct instrument, tempo, time signature, quantization, and voices during import. MIDI transcription often creates tied notes, incorrect rests, extra voices, and wrong enharmonic spellings. - Correct the score. Check every measure against the FLAC recording. Fix pitches, durations, tuplets, tempo changes, key signatures, lyrics, dynamics, articulations, and instrument ranges; automatic audio transcription cannot reliably infer all of these details.
- Export MXL. In MuseScore, choose File → Export, select Compressed MusicXML or the
.mxlextension, and save the result. Reopen the exported file in another MusicXML-compatible notation application to verify staff assignments and layout.
For a vocal or single-instrument recording, a dedicated audio-to-notation application may produce better MIDI than a general-purpose transcription tool. Audiveris is not a FLAC converter: it recognizes printed or scanned sheet music images and is useful only when the source is already visual notation.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
The conversion is not lossless because it changes continuous audio into estimated musical symbols. A recording with several instruments may require separate stems before transcription. Percussion, chords, expressive timing, slides, vibrato, pedal noise, and overlapping notes are especially difficult to represent accurately in MIDI and MusicXML.
MXL compatibility depends on the receiving notation program's MusicXML importer. Preserve the original FLAC, MIDI, and editable project alongside the MXL because MXL usually omits audio, plugin settings, and some application-specific layout features. If 101convert.com lists FLAC-to-MXL conversion, it can be used without installing software, but a direct result may be only a container-level conversion or may fail to produce meaningful notation; audio transcription and score correction remain necessary.
