A FLAC recording contains audio samples, while MUSICXML stores written musical notation. Converting between them therefore requires audio-to-score transcription, usually through MIDI and notation software, rather than a direct file-format conversion.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC, or Free Lossless Audio Codec, compresses PCM audio without discarding information. It is commonly created by CD-ripping software, digital audio workstations, recording applications, and tools such as ffmpeg; music players and archival libraries frequently use it for lossless storage.

What the MUSICXML format is

MUSICXML is an interchange format for written scores. It represents notes, rests, durations, voices, measures, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, lyrics, dynamics, articulations, and layout data so notation programs such as MuseScore, Finale, and Sibelius can open and edit the score.

Use MUSICXML when the desired result is editable notation for arranging, transposing, engraving, printing, or moving a score between notation applications. It is not an audio format and cannot preserve the original recording, timbre, room sound, or performance nuances.

How to actually convert FLAC to MUSICXML

The practical workflow is FLAC → MIDI → MUSICXML. Basic Pitch is a suitable local transcription tool for turning recorded audio into MIDI, and MuseScore can convert the MIDI into notation.

  1. Install Basic Pitch and its dependencies with pip install basic-pitch.
  2. Transcribe the recording: basic-pitch midi_output recording.flac. The command writes a MIDI file into midi_output.
  3. Open the generated MIDI in MuseScore using File → Open. During import, select the correct tempo, instrument assignment, and quantization settings if MuseScore offers them.
  4. Check the imported notation manually. Correct the time signature, measure grouping, note durations, rests, tuplets, ties, voices, key signature, and instrument range.
  5. Save the score as MUSICXML with File → Export, choose MusicXML or .musicxml, and save the result.

For batch processing, MuseScore may also export from the command line with a command such as mscore input.mid -o output.musicxml; the executable name varies by operating system and MuseScore version.

You can also try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. For an audio recording, verify that the service actually performs audio transcription rather than merely renaming or repackaging the file, because a valid MUSICXML document requires inferred musical notation.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Audio transcription is estimation, not lossless conversion. Basic Pitch generally performs best with a clean recording, clearly audible pitched instruments, limited reverberation, and one dominant melodic or harmonic source. Drums, dense mixes, distorted sounds, overlapping instruments, expressive timing, and background noise can produce missing notes, false notes, incorrect durations, or wrong octaves.

MIDI does not contain enough information to reconstruct engraving choices reliably. MuseScore may import notes but assign unsuitable voices, beaming, tuplets, rests, or measure boundaries. Inspect the full score before printing or sharing it.

A MIDI file can preserve approximate pitches and timing, but it does not preserve lyrics, dynamics, articulations, pedal markings, or the original performer’s interpretation unless the transcription software explicitly detects them. Exporting the corrected score as .musicxml improves interchange, but different notation programs may still interpret page layout and application-specific markings differently.
