MusicXML is an open, XML-based format for representing musical notation. It is used by notation software, composers, arrangers, publishers, and music educators to exchange scores between applications such as Finale, Sibelius, MuseScore, Dorico, and others. A MusicXML file describes notes, rests, dynamics, articulations, lyrics, tempo, and layout information, but it does not contain recorded audio.

Because MusicXML is a score format rather than an audio format, it is typically used for editing, printing, sharing, and importing/exporting sheet music. To create audio from MusicXML, the score must first be rendered by notation software or a synthesizer.

Target format

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. It is a compressed audio format that preserves the original audio data exactly, unlike MP3 or AAC, which are lossy. FLAC is widely used by audiophiles, archivists, musicians, and anyone who wants high-quality audio with smaller file sizes than WAV or AIFF.

Its main advantages are lossless compression, broad support in music players and editors, and suitability for archiving and distribution. FLAC is commonly used for finished recordings, mastered audio, and high-quality exports from audio production tools.

How to perform the conversion

Converting MusicXML to FLAC is a two-step process: first, render the notation into audio; second, export or encode that audio as FLAC. The best desktop workflow is usually a notation program such as MuseScore, Finale, or Dorico, followed by an audio export step.

1. Open the .musicxml or .xml score in your notation software.
2. Check the playback setup, including instruments, soundfonts, and tempo, because these directly affect the rendered audio.
3. Play back the score to confirm that the notation imports correctly.
4. Export the score to an audio file, usually WAV or AIFF, using File → Export or File → Save As depending on the application.
5. Convert the exported audio to FLAC with an audio editor or encoder such as Audacity, ffmpeg, or a built-in export option if available.

If your notation software can export directly to FLAC, use that option. In MuseScore, for example, you can open the MusicXML file and then choose File → Export, selecting FLAC if it is offered. If FLAC is not available directly, export to WAV first and then encode to FLAC with ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.wav output.flac

For batch or command-line workflows, the usual approach is still to render the score to an intermediate audio file before FLAC encoding. MusicXML itself cannot be converted to FLAC without a playback/rendering engine, because it contains notation data rather than sound.

Notes on quality and limitations

The quality of the resulting FLAC depends on the sound library, instrument samples, and playback settings used during rendering. Since MusicXML is not audio, the conversion does not preserve a real performance; it creates a synthesized playback of the score. This means expression, human timing, and tone color may differ from a live recording.

FLAC is lossless, so once the audio is rendered, encoding to FLAC will not add compression artifacts. However, any limitations introduced during score playback, such as basic MIDI sounds or missing articulations, will remain in the final file. For best results, use high-quality virtual instruments and verify the score before export.

Also note that some notation programs export only to WAV or AIFF, not FLAC directly. In those cases, the intermediate file is normal and does not reduce final quality when converted properly to FLAC.
