MSCZ is the compressed project file format used by MuseScore, a popular music notation editor. It stores a score’s notation data, layout, instruments, lyrics, articulations, and other engraving information in a compact archive. Musicians, arrangers, educators, and composers use MSCZ files to create, edit, and share sheet music projects.

Because MSCZ is a notation project format rather than an audio format, it cannot be played directly as finished sound in most media players. To turn it into audio, the score must first be rendered by notation software or a compatible engine.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable way to convert MSCZ to FLAC is to open the score in MuseScore, export or render it to an intermediate audio file, and then save or convert that audio to FLAC. If your MuseScore version supports direct FLAC export, use that; otherwise export to WAV and convert the WAV to FLAC with an audio tool.

1. Open the .mscz file in MuseScore.
2. Check the score playback and sound settings if needed, since the final audio depends on the selected instruments and playback engine.
3. Use File → Export and choose FLAC if it is available in your version.
4. If FLAC is not offered directly, export to WAV first using File → Export.
5. Convert the WAV file to FLAC with a desktop audio tool such as FFmpeg or another local converter.

If you prefer a command-line workflow and already have a rendered audio file, FFmpeg is usually the simplest option because it supports high-quality FLAC encoding and preserves the audio exactly during compression.

Notes on quality, compatibility, and limitations

MSCZ does not contain audio; it contains notation data. That means the conversion quality depends on how MuseScore renders the score, including instrument sounds, dynamics, tempo, and any playback-specific settings. Two different MuseScore versions or sound libraries can produce slightly different FLAC output from the same score.

FLAC is lossless, so once the score has been rendered to audio, the FLAC file will not introduce additional compression artifacts. However, if you export first to a lossy format such as MP3, quality will be reduced before FLAC conversion and cannot be recovered.

For best results, export from MuseScore at the highest practical quality, preferably to WAV or directly to FLAC if supported, and avoid unnecessary intermediate lossy formats. Also note that very large or complex scores may take longer to render, and playback differences can occur if the score uses third-party sound fonts or plugins.
