Mscz to mid file conversion
MSCZ is the compressed score format used by MuseScore. It is not a generic proprietary format in the sense of being locked to one vendor, but it is a MuseScore-specific file type. To convert .mscz files to .mid, open the score in MuseScore and export it as MIDI.
MuseScore can export MSCZ scores to MIDI (.mid) format. In MuseScore, use File → Export and choose MIDI as the output format. In some versions, File → Save As may also offer MIDI-related options, but Export is the standard method for creating a .mid file.
Steps:
- Open the .mscz file in MuseScore.
- Check the score for any playback or notation settings you want reflected in the export.
- Go to File → Export.
- Select MIDI or .mid as the output format.
- Save the exported file.
Important: MIDI preserves note events, timing, tempo, and some playback data, but it does not preserve engraving layout, page formatting, fonts, lyrics formatting, or most score appearance details. Repeats, articulations, instrument balance, and other playback-related elements may sound different depending on how the score is set up and how the MIDI export handles them.
If you do not have MuseScore installed, use another notation program that can open .mscz files and export MIDI. For most users, however, MuseScore is the most reliable option for this conversion.
Tip: If you need the score to look the same on another device, export to PDF. If you need playback or sequencing, MIDI is the better choice.
