Free online TIF to MUSICXML converter

A TIF scan of printed sheet music contains only pixels, while notation programs require structured symbols for editing and playback. Optical music recognition (OMR) must therefore read the score and create a MusicXML file before software such as MuseScore, Dorico, or Finale can use it.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also called TIFF, is a raster image format commonly produced by scanners and document-imaging software. In music composition, it usually stores scanned pages of printed scores, parts, manuscripts, or music engraved as a page image.

A TIF records staff lines, notes, rests, text, and symbols as image pixels; it does not identify their musical meaning. A multipage TIF may contain several score pages, but page order and musical relationships still have to be interpreted by OMR software.

What the MUSICXML format is

MusicXML is a structured interchange format for musical notation. It represents pitches, durations, voices, measures, clefs, key signatures, dynamics, lyrics, articulations, and layout information so that notation applications can edit, transpose, print, and play the score.

MusicXML is useful when moving a score between programs such as MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico, Finale, and compatible digital audio or notation tools. The format is normally stored as an uncompressed .musicxml file or as a compressed .mxl package.

How to convert TIF to MUSICXML

1. Prepare a readable TIF scan and confirm that all pages are included in the correct order.

For the best recognition, scan at about 300–400 dpi, keep pages straight, remove speckles and shadows, and use a clear black-and-white or grayscale image. Split an unusually large multipage TIF into individual pages if the OMR application cannot process its page structure correctly.

Quality and compatibility limitations

OMR cannot recover information that is absent or ambiguous in the scan. Expect manual correction for tied notes, tuplets, beaming, overlapping voices, ornaments, lyrics, handwritten markings, irregular notation, and damaged staff lines.

Recognition errors can change rhythm or pitch without producing an obvious visual warning, so compare every converted measure with the original TIF. Check especially key signatures, time signatures, repeat structures, accidentals, voice assignments, slurs, and instrument transpositions.

MusicXML import quality varies between notation programs and versions. If a program rejects a file, try the uncompressed .musicxml form instead of .mxl, or open and re-export it with a compatible notation application. The converted file contains editable notation, not the original page appearance; unusual engraving layout may need to be rebuilt manually.
