What the AIFF format is
AIFF, or Audio Interchange File Format, is an uncompressed audio container developed by Apple and commonly saved with the .aiff or .aif extension. It stores sampled sound, including parameters such as sample rate, bit depth, channel count, and duration, but it does not normally store notes, rests, measures, key signatures, or reliable tempo data.
Audio editors, Apple applications, digital audio workstations, samplers, and older recording systems create or use AIFF files. AIFF is often encountered when importing studio recordings, instrument takes, archival audio, or files exported from GarageBand and other music-production software.
What the MUSICXML format is
MUSICXML is an XML-based interchange format for symbolic music notation. It represents pitches, durations, voices, measures, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, dynamics, articulations, lyrics, and other score information so notation applications can exchange editable scores.
Use MUSICXML when the destination program needs notation rather than audio. MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, and many educational and composition systems can import or export it. MUSICXML files are usually larger than MIDI because they preserve more score-layout and notation information, while MIDI primarily represents performance events.
How to actually convert AIFF to MUSICXML
Because AIFF has no explicit note data, the process requires automatic or manual transcription. For a convenient attempt without installing software, upload the AIFF file to the built-in converter on 101convert.com and select MUSICXML if that conversion is available for the file. The result should be opened in a notation program and corrected rather than treated as a finished score.
For a desktop workflow, use an audio-to-MIDI transcription tool, then export the imported MIDI as MUSICXML:
- Convert AIFF to WAV if the transcription software does not accept AIFF. With FFmpeg, run
ffmpeg -i input.aiff -ar 44100 -ac 1 input.wav. Mono audio can improve monophonic pitch detection; retain stereo if spatial separation matters. - Run an audio transcription system such as Spotify Basic Pitch on
input.wavto generate a MIDI file. Basic Pitch is most reliable with one clearly recorded melodic or instrumental line; polyphonic mixes and percussion produce more errors. - Open the resulting
.midfile in MuseScore with File → Open. Select the appropriate quantization, instrument, and shortest expected note value during import. - Correct pitches, note lengths, tuplets, rests, voices, tempo, key signature, and measure divisions in MuseScore. Audio transcription cannot reliably infer the composer’s intended notation in every passage.
- Export the corrected score with File → Export, choose
MusicXMLorCompressed MusicXML, and save the resulting.musicxmlor.mxlfile.
For a single melody, manual entry in MuseScore may be faster and more accurate than automatic transcription. If the recording already came from notation software, locate its original MIDI, MusicXML, or native score file instead of transcribing the AIFF.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Transcription accuracy depends on monophonic texture, clean attacks, stable tuning, low background noise, and a consistent tempo. Chords, overlapping instruments, reverb, rubato, ornamentation, swing, expressive timing, and sustain-pedal resonance can create incorrect pitches, extra notes, missing notes, or unsuitable rhythms.
MIDI-to-MUSICXML conversion also requires interpretation: MIDI usually lacks reliable beaming, enharmonic spelling, phrasing, voice allocation, and readable rests. Check the score in the target notation application and re-export using the MUSICXML version it supports if import errors occur. Embedded audio, studio effects, and the original AIFF recording are not preserved in MUSICXML.
