Free online AIFF to MSCZ converter

An AIFF file contains recorded sound, while an MSCZ file contains editable musical notation for MuseScore. Converting between them therefore requires audio transcription—usually by generating MIDI first—rather than a direct file-format change.

What the AIFF format is

AIFF, or Audio Interchange File Format, is an uncompressed audio container developed by Apple and commonly used for studio recordings, sound effects, samples, and archival audio. It can store PCM audio with metadata such as sample rate, bit depth, channel count, and artist information. Digital audio workstations including Logic Pro, GarageBand, Pro Tools, Cubase, and Ableton Live can create or export AIFF files; macOS applications also encounter them frequently.

What the MSCZ format is

MSCZ is MuseScore's compressed notation format. It stores notes, rhythms, rests, clefs, key signatures, dynamics, lyrics, layout, and score settings for editing in MuseScore. Unlike a WAV or AIFF file, it does not contain a recording of the performance. MSCZ is suitable when you need to correct notation, change instrumentation, print sheet music, or continue editing the arrangement in MuseScore.

How to actually convert AIFF to MSCZ

MuseScore cannot reliably turn arbitrary audio into a complete musical score by itself. Use an audio-to-MIDI transcription tool, then import the MIDI into MuseScore and save the resulting score.

1. Make a copy of the AIFF and identify whether it contains one instrument, a vocal melody, or a full mix. Monophonic recordings produce more accurate transcription than polyphonic recordings.
2. Transcribe the audio with a tool that supports AIFF input and MIDI export. Set the correct tempo, meter, key, and instrument where the software provides those controls. If the tool does not accept AIFF, convert it to WAV first with a desktop audio utility such as FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.aiff output.wav.
3. Export the detected notes as a Standard MIDI File, using .mid or .midi as the filename extension.
4. Open MuseScore and choose File → Open, then select the MIDI file. In MuseScore's MIDI import dialog, select the tracks to keep, choose an appropriate quantization setting, and enable split-staff or piano interpretation when applicable.
5. Inspect the imported notation and correct rhythms, tuplets, enharmonic spellings, rests, ties, tempo changes, voices, and instrument assignments. Audio transcription commonly produces extra notes and incorrect note lengths.
6. Save the edited score with File → Save As and choose the compressed MuseScore format, producing a file such as score.mscz.

Confirm the generated notation in MuseScore before treating it as an accurate score; a simple container conversion cannot infer notes from recorded audio.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

AIFF-to-MSCZ conversion is inherently interpretive. A mixed recording with drums, chords, reverb, background noise, or several simultaneous instruments may require manual transcription or separate stems. Lossless AIFF preserves the source waveform, but it does not provide note boundaries or readable music notation.

For best results, use a clean, isolated instrument or vocal line, remove noise, establish a stable tempo, and verify the detected key. MIDI carries note events but not the original audio; after import, MuseScore may need substantial cleanup. Save the final MSCZ with the same or a newer MuseScore version than the one used to edit it, because opening it in older releases can affect unsupported notation features or layout.
