A JPG scan or photograph of sheet music cannot be edited as notation in MuseScore, which uses MSCZ for its native score files. Converting it requires optical music recognition (OMR) to interpret the image and create editable musical notation.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format commonly used for scanned or photographed sheet music. Scanners, phones, cameras, PDF viewers, and image editors can create JPG files, and music publishers or musicians often encounter them as page images shared by email or stored in digital archives.

JPG stores pixels rather than notes, rhythms, measures, text objects, or instrument parts. Compression can reduce file size, but it can also blur staff lines and symbols that an OMR application must recognize.

What the MSCZ format is

MSCZ is MuseScore's compressed native score format. It stores editable notation such as pitches, durations, rests, measures, clefs, key signatures, dynamics, lyrics, layout data, and instrument definitions.

MuseScore can open and save MSCZ files directly, allowing the resulting score to be edited, played back, transposed, printed, or exported to formats such as PDF, MIDI, and MusicXML. MSCZ is suitable for working files; use MusicXML when transferring notation to other score-editing applications.

How to actually convert JPG to MSCZ

The reliable desktop workflow is JPG → MusicXML → MSCZ, because MuseScore does not natively convert a page image into notation.

  1. Prepare the image. Crop away borders, rotate it correctly, and use a sharp scan at roughly 300–400 dpi. A straight, high-contrast page with visible staff lines produces better recognition than a compressed phone photograph.
  2. Open the JPG in Audiveris, an optical music recognition application. Use its page or image import command, then run recognition and inspect the detected systems, measures, notes, rests, clefs, key signatures, and text.
  3. Correct recognition errors in Audiveris before export. OMR commonly misreads note beams, tuplets, accidentals, overlapping voices, lyrics, ornaments, and handwritten or unusually engraved notation.
  4. Export the recognized score as MusicXML, typically using File → Export → MusicXML. Keep the exported file as an intermediate backup.
  5. Open the MusicXML file in MuseScore with File → Open. Compare every measure with the original JPG and correct notation, instrument assignments, page breaks, lyrics, and spacing.
  6. Save the editable result with File → Save As and choose the MSCZ format, producing a file such as score.mscz.

For a no-installation option, upload the JPG to the JPG-to-MSCZ converter on 101convert.com, select MSCZ as the output, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Review the result in MuseScore because image recognition can produce notation errors even when the file opens successfully.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This is not a pixel-preserving format conversion. The JPG contains an appearance of a score, while MSCZ contains interpreted musical structure; therefore, conversion quality depends on recognition accuracy rather than only on image resolution.

Printed, single-staff or regular multi-staff notation usually converts better than handwritten scores, dense orchestral pages, guitar tablature, percussion notation, cue-sized notes, historical engraving, or pages with folds and shadows. A multi-page JPG set may require separate recognition and later combination in MuseScore.

MSCZ files are version-sensitive: a newer MuseScore release may use features that older releases cannot fully reproduce. Save a MusicXML copy after correction for broader interchange, and retain the original JPG as a visual reference.
