What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container commonly using AAC compression, although it can also contain lossless ALAC audio. Apple Music, iTunes, Voice Memos, smartphones, screen-recording tools, and audio editors commonly create M4A files. The file stores sound, not explicit notes, rests, measures, key signatures, or instrument parts.

What the MSCZ format is

MSCZ is MuseScore’s compressed score format. It stores notation data such as pitches, rhythms, measures, dynamics, articulations, lyrics, layout, and instrument setup in an editable form. MSCZ is useful for opening a score in MuseScore, changing notes, extracting parts, and exporting to PDF, MusicXML, MIDI, or audio.

How to convert M4A to MSCZ

There is no reliable direct file-format conversion. Use this workflow:

1. Prepare the audio. Trim silence and use the clearest recording available. For tools that work better with WAV, convert the file with FFmpeg:

2. Transcribe the audio. Run the M4A or WAV through an audio-to-MIDI tool such as Spotify’s Basic Pitch, Melodyne, or another transcription application. Choose a monophonic melody mode when the recording contains one clear melodic line; polyphonic transcription is less reliable for chords, dense arrangements, drums, and overlapping instruments.
3. Export MIDI. Save the transcription as transcription.mid. If the software offers separate tracks, export melody, bass, accompaniment, and drums separately when possible.
4. Import the MIDI into MuseScore. Open MuseScore and choose File → Open, then select transcription.mid. Set the correct MIDI quantization, time signature, and instrument assignments in the import dialog.
5. Correct the notation. Check tempo, meter, tuplets, tied notes, enharmonic spellings, rests, voices, pickup measures, and barlines. Audio transcription often produces short unwanted notes and incorrect rhythms that must be edited manually.
6. Save as MSCZ. In MuseScore, choose File → Save As, select the MuseScore compressed score format, and save the file as score.mscz.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is an interpretation rather than a lossless format change. A clean solo recording with a steady tempo can produce a usable melody, while mixed commercial audio may yield incorrect notes, rhythms, chords, lyrics, and instrument parts. Reverb, background noise, compression artifacts, changing tempo, and multiple simultaneous instruments reduce transcription accuracy.

MuseScore opens MIDI as performance data, not as a finished engraved score. MIDI may omit notation details such as phrasing, intended enharmonic spelling, articulations, and exact voice leading, so manual cleanup is normally required before sharing the MSCZ file.
