A scanned or photographed music score is stored as a JPEG, but notation software requires structured notation rather than a flat image. Optical music recognition can turn the image into MusicXML, which MuseScore can then save as an editable MSCZ score.
What the JPEG format is
JPEG, identified by .jpg or .jpeg, is a raster image format that stores the visible pixels of a page using lossy compression. Cameras, scanners, phones, screenshots, image editors, and PDF export tools commonly create JPEG files.
In music composition, a JPEG usually contains a scanned sheet-music page, a photographed manuscript, a notation screenshot, or an exported preview. It has no information about notes, measures, clefs, instruments, playback, or editable layout; those elements exist only as pixels.
What the MSCZ format is
MSCZ is MuseScore's compressed native score format. It stores structured notation together with measures, voices, instruments, page layout, text markings, sounds, and score settings.
An MSCZ file can be opened and edited in MuseScore, transposed, played back, printed, or exported to formats such as PDF, MIDI, MusicXML, and audio. Its principal advantage over JPEG is that notation remains selectable and editable instead of being a fixed image.
How to actually convert JPEG to MSCZ
Recommended desktop workflow: Audiveris and MuseScore
- Prepare the JPEG at the highest available resolution. Crop away unrelated borders, straighten the page, and use a clear scan with dark notation on a light background.
- Install Audiveris, an optical music recognition application, and MuseScore.
- In Audiveris, choose File → Open and select the JPEG. Let Audiveris process the page, then inspect detected systems, measures, clefs, time signatures, key signatures, and notes.
- Correct recognition errors in Audiveris where possible. OMR results are suggestions and commonly require manual checking.
- Export the recognized score through File → Export → MusicXML. Depending on the Audiveris version, the exported file may be
.musicxmlor compressed.mxl. - Open the MusicXML file in MuseScore using File → Open. Check rhythms, pitches, beaming, ties, articulations, lyrics, dynamics, page breaks, and instrument assignments.
- Save the corrected score with File → Save As, choose the MuseScore format, and use a filename such as
score.mscz.
You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the JPEG, select MSCZ as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. For complex, handwritten, damaged, or multi-page scores, the Audiveris–MuseScore workflow provides better opportunities to inspect and correct the notation.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This is not a lossless container conversion. The JPEG contains an image, so creating an MSCZ requires optical music recognition and interpretation. Notes that look clear to a person can be misread when staff lines are faint, symbols overlap, pages are skewed, or the source is handwritten.
Use scans around 300–600 dpi when possible, avoid heavy JPEG compression, and keep each page at a consistent scale. Multi-page scores may need page-order and part-linking corrections after import.
Always compare the generated score with the source image, especially pitches, rests, tuplets, key and time signatures, ties, repeats, ornaments, lyrics, and dynamics. Playback is a practical way to find rhythm and pitch errors that are difficult to see.
MuseScore normally saves MSCZ files in the version's current format. A newer MuseScore release may add features that older releases cannot fully edit, so export MusicXML or PDF as a compatibility copy when sharing the score with users of different versions.
