What the PNG format is
PNG is a raster-image format that stores a page as pixels rather than musical objects such as notes, rests, voices, and measures. In music composition, PNG files commonly come from scanned sheet music, screenshots, notation programs using File → Export → PNG, and graphics editors.
PNG preserves sharp text and notation without JPEG compression artifacts, but it contains no semantic score data. A notation editor therefore cannot directly select or change an individual note in a PNG.
What the MSCZ format is
MSCZ is MuseScore's compressed project format. It stores an editable musical score, including notation, layout, instruments, playback settings, and usually embedded resources; internally, it packages MuseScore score data in a compressed archive.
MSCZ is suitable for editing in MuseScore, transposing passages, changing instrumentation, generating parts, playing the score, and exporting it to PDF, MusicXML, MIDI, or audio. It is preferable to a PNG when the score must remain structurally editable, but it is primarily associated with MuseScore and may require MuseScore or compatible notation software for full fidelity.
How to actually convert PNG to MSCZ
The reliable desktop method is optical music recognition (OMR) followed by saving the recognized score in MuseScore.
- Prepare the source image. Use a straight, tightly cropped page at about 300–600 DPI. Remove shadows, margins, skew, and background noise; keep all clefs, key signatures, time signatures, articulations, lyrics, and repeat markings visible.
- Open the PNG in an OMR application such as Audiveris. Import the image, run page recognition, and inspect the detected staff lines, measures, pitches, rhythms, accidentals, slurs, dynamics, and text. Correct recognition errors before export.
- Export the recognized result as MusicXML, for example
score.musicxml. MusicXML provides the interchange layer that carries the reconstructed musical structure into MuseScore. - Open
score.musicxmlin MuseScore using File → Open. Compare every measure with the original PNG, especially tuplets, dotted rhythms, beaming, ties, grace notes, lyrics, and multiple voices. - Save the corrected project with File → Save As and choose the
.msczextension, such asscore.mscz.
For a browser-based conversion, 101convert.com provides a free conversion option without installing software. Upload the PNG, select MSCZ if the converter offers notation recognition for that input, and download the result; verify the generated score in MuseScore because image recognition can produce silent musical errors.
Quality and compatibility limitations
This is not a lossless file-format conversion: it is an OCR reconstruction from pixels. A clean computer-generated score usually converts better than a handwritten score, faded scan, skewed photograph, or page containing overlapping annotations. Recognition quality also decreases with very small notation, damaged staff lines, complex orchestral layouts, lyrics, percussion notation, tablature, and handwritten markings.
Always compare the MSCZ against the PNG and listen through the playback. OMR may create a valid-looking score with incorrect pitches or rhythms. If the source has several pages, process and check page order, instruments, system breaks, and linked parts before saving the final project. A PNG can be retained alongside the MSCZ as the visual reference because the MSCZ may not reproduce ambiguous markings exactly.
