A PNG usually contains a scanned or exported image of sheet music, while MSCX is MuseScore’s editable notation format. Converting the image requires optical music recognition (OMR) to reconstruct notes, rhythms, rests, and layout before saving the result as an MSCX score.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format commonly used for scans, screenshots, and page images of musical notation. It stores pixels rather than notes or musical structure, so notation software cannot edit its symbols directly. Sheet-music PNG files are often created by scanners, notation programs exporting pages, or screenshots from PDFs and score viewers.

What the MSCX format is

MSCX is MuseScore’s uncompressed, XML-based score format. It stores structured musical data such as pitches, durations, voices, clefs, key signatures, lyrics, articulations, page layout, and instrument information, making the score editable in MuseScore.

MSCX is useful when you need to correct notation, transpose music, change instrumentation, reflow pages, or export the score to PDF, MusicXML, MIDI, or audio. Unlike a PNG, it does not merely preserve the visual appearance of a page; it represents the notation as editable score objects.

How to actually convert PNG to MSCX

Using optical music recognition

  1. Prepare a clear PNG at approximately 300–600 dpi. Crop away unnecessary margins, straighten tilted pages, and use a clean black-on-white image when possible.
  2. Open the PNG in an OMR program such as Audiveris. Import the image, run page recognition, and inspect detected systems, staves, clefs, time signatures, barlines, notes, rests, and text.
  3. Correct recognition errors in Audiveris, then export the recognized score as MusicXML, such as score.musicxml or score.mxl.
  4. Open the exported MusicXML file in MuseScore with File → Open.
  5. Review every measure in MuseScore, especially beaming, tuplets, accidentals, voices, lyrics, repeats, dynamics, and staff assignments. Choose File → Save As, select the MuseScore format, and save the result as score.mscx.

You can also upload the file to the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Image-to-score results still require musical proofreading because recognition accuracy depends on the scan and notation style.

When no editable notation is required

If the goal is only to place the page image in a MuseScore project, importing the PNG as a score image may preserve its appearance better than OMR. This does not create editable notes and is not a true notation conversion.

Quality and compatibility limitations

There is no reliable lossless conversion from PNG to MSCX because PNG contains visual symbols, not the original musical data. OMR can misread low-resolution scans, handwritten notation, overlapping voices, cue-sized notes, unusual symbols, guitar tablature, ornaments, lyrics, and damaged staff lines.

MusicXML is the practical interchange step between OMR software and MuseScore. Saving directly as MSCX after import preserves MuseScore-specific editing data, but the resulting score may differ from the source image in spacing, line breaks, fonts, and page layout. Keep the original PNG alongside the MSCX file for visual reference and archive the intermediate MusicXML file if later editing in another notation program may be needed.
