Understanding PNG and CPR file formats

CPR is a proprietary project file format used by Steinberg Cubase, a popular digital audio workstation (DAW). The CPR file contains project data such as audio tracks, MIDI information, effects, and arrangement, but it does not store image or standard audio data directly.

Is PNG to CPR conversion possible?

Direct conversion from PNG to CPR is not natively supported, as these formats serve entirely different purposes. PNG is an image file, while CPR is a Cubase project file. However, if you want to use a PNG image (for example, as album art or a track icon) within a Cubase project, you can import the PNG into Cubase and save the project as a CPR file.

How to use a PNG image in a Cubase CPR project

1. Open Steinberg Cubase on your computer.
2. Create a new project or open an existing one (File → New Project or File → Open).
3. To add a PNG as track icon or artwork:
   • Right-click on the track header and select Track Control Settings.
   • Enable the Track Pictures option.
   • Click the track icon area and choose Import Picture to select your PNG file.
4. To use a PNG as a reference or for notes, you can add it to the Project Notepad or as a background in the Score Editor (if supported).
5. Save your project by selecting File → Save. The project will be saved as a CPR file, and your imported PNG will be referenced within the project.
