How to convert png to dst file

A commercial or home embroidery machine may require a Tajima-compatible .dst file when the supplied artwork is a PNG. Conversion requires digitizing the bitmap into stitch objects; changing the extension or compressing the image cannot create a usable embroidery design.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster format that stores pixels with lossless compression and can include transparency. Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, scanners, websites, and design applications commonly produce PNG files for logos, illustrations, screenshots, and scanned artwork.

A PNG contains no embroidery instructions: it has no stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, thread changes, or fabric settings. Its pixel dimensions also do not define the finished embroidery size.

What the DST format is

DST is a stitch-command format developed for Tajima systems and supported by many commercial and domestic embroidery machines. It stores a sequence of needle movements plus control codes for jumps, color changes or stops, and the end of the design. Machines may infer trims from jump sequences, so trim behavior is not identical across all DST-compatible equipment.

DST is compact and widely accepted by embroidery production workflows, but it is not a vector version of the PNG. A digitizer must interpret the artwork as embroidery objects such as fill areas, satin columns, and running-stitch outlines. DST normally does not preserve thread names or reliable thread colors; those assignments may need to be supplied separately.

How to convert a PNG to DST

Free desktop method: Inkscape and Ink/Stitch

  1. Install Inkscape and the Ink/Stitch extension from their official project sites.
  2. Import the PNG with File → Import and embed it if Inkscape asks whether to link or embed the image.
  3. Set the intended finished width and height, then use the PNG as a visual reference. Trace separate closed paths for each color and embroidery area. Manual tracing usually produces better results than automatic bitmap tracing; use automatic tracing only as a starting point for clean, high-contrast artwork.
  4. Assign stitch types in Ink/Stitch. Use fills for broad areas, satin columns for suitably narrow borders and lettering, and running stitches for fine outlines. Set stitch length, density, underlay, pull compensation, stitch order, and jump or trim behavior.
  5. Run the Ink/Stitch simulator and correct gaps, excessive jumps, short stitches, thread buildup, weak underlay, and incorrect object order.
  6. Export through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, choose DST, and save a file such as logo.dst. The exact menu labels can vary between Ink/Stitch releases.

Commercial desktop software

Hatch Embroidery and Wilcom EmbroideryStudio support raster import, assisted or manual digitizing, stitch editing, simulation, and DST export. Import the PNG, define the design size, create and inspect each embroidery object, simulate the sewing sequence, and use the installed version's DST export command, often labeled Export Design → Tajima DST. Automatic digitizing should be treated as a draft, not as a finished machine file.

Online digitizing services

Online digitizing services can turn a supplied PNG into an edited DST when desktop digitizing software or embroidery experience is unavailable. Services such as Digitizing Made Easy and Absolute Digitizing accept artwork and return machine files; check their stated stitch-editing process, size requirements, revisions, turnaround, and thread-chart handling before ordering. A generic file converter such as Convertio cannot infer stitch paths, densities, or object order; renaming or packaging PNG data does not produce a sewable DST.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Image resolution does not determine stitch quality. A large PNG still lacks stitch directions and object boundaries. Clean, high-contrast artwork with a specified finished size is easier to digitize than a small or blurred image.
  • Set the final width and height before detailed digitizing. Substantial resizing afterward can distort satin columns, change effective density, and cause gaps or excessive thread buildup.
  • Simplify small text, thin outlines, gradients, shadows, and photographic detail. Features visible on a screen may be too small or unstable to reproduce with thread.
  • Test-stitch the DST on the intended fabric with the planned stabilizer, needle, thread, and hooping method. Fabric stretch and movement require changes to density, underlay, and pull compensation.
  • Confirm the machine's hoop limits, maximum design dimensions, supported DST behavior, color-change or stop handling, and trim settings before transfer. A DST may display generic colors even when the design has multiple thread-change commands.
  • Keep the original editable embroidery project, such as the Ink/Stitch, Hatch, or Wilcom file. DST is a machine-transfer format and is less suitable for detailed editing than the source project.
