Free online PNG to DST converter

Many embroidery machines accept Tajima-compatible DST files rather than artwork files, so a PNG logo must be digitized before it can be sewn. This conversion is needed when supplied artwork must be transferred to an embroidery machine or production workflow.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores colored pixels with lossless compression and can include transparency. Designers, photographers, scanners, websites, and applications such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Illustrator, and Inkscape commonly use it for logos, icons, illustrations, screenshots, and reference artwork.

A PNG contains no embroidery instructions. It does not define stitch direction, stitch length, fill type, underlay, pull compensation, object order, thread changes, trims, hoop size, or fabric settings. Pixel dimensions also do not define the finished sewn size.

What the DST format is

DST is a compact machine-embroidery stitch format developed for Tajima systems and supported by many commercial and domestic embroidery machines. It stores a sequence of needle movements and control commands for jumps, color changes or stops, and the end of the design.

DST is widely supported for transferring a digitized design to a machine, but it is not a vector version of the PNG and is not a full editing format. A digitizer must convert the artwork into embroidery objects such as fill areas, satin columns, and running-stitch outlines. DST usually does not preserve reliable thread-color names, thread brands, or complete design settings. Machines may also interpret jump sequences and trims differently, so a DST that opens successfully can still need machine-specific adjustment.

How to convert a PNG to DST

Using Ink/Stitch and Inkscape

Inkscape with the free Ink/Stitch extension is a practical desktop option. It requires digitizing the artwork; importing or renaming the PNG alone cannot create a sewable file.

1. Prepare the artwork at the intended physical width and height. Remove unnecessary background detail, simplify colors, and use a transparent background when appropriate. Check the machine's hoop and sewing-area limits.
2. Open Inkscape and import the PNG through File → Import. Embed the image if prompted, place it on a locked reference layer, and use Path → Trace Bitmap only as a starting point for clean, high-contrast artwork.
3. Redraw or clean separate shapes for each embroidery area. Use closed objects for fills, paired boundary lines for satin columns, and suitable paths for running-stitch details. Set the sewing order from background objects to foreground details.
4. Assign Ink/Stitch stitch types and parameters. Choose fills for broad areas, satin columns for suitably narrow borders and lettering, and running stitches for fine outlines. Set stitch length, fill-row spacing, underlay, pull compensation, object order, jumps, and trims according to the fabric, thread, needle, and design size.
5. Open the Ink/Stitch parameter editor and simulator through Extensions → Ink/Stitch. Check for gaps, excessive density, short repeated stitches, long jumps, weak underlay, thread buildup, and incorrect color-change positions.
6. Export through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, choose DST, and save a file such as logo.dst. Menu names can vary between Ink/Stitch releases.
7. Load the file using the machine's required USB drive, network location, or memory card, then sew a test on the intended fabric with the planned stabilizer before production.

Using commercial digitizing software

Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, and Embird provide raster import, assisted tracing, manual object creation, stitch editing, simulation, and DST export. Import the PNG, set the final design dimensions, create and inspect each embroidery object, simulate the sewing sequence, and use the installed program's DST or Tajima export command. Automatic digitizing is a draft that normally requires manual cleanup and parameter editing.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Digitize at the final sewn size. Resizing a completed design can alter satin-column width and effective density, causing gaps, thread buildup, or distorted details.
• Small text, thin outlines, narrow gaps, gradients, shadows, and photographic detail often need simplification. Screen-visible features may be too small or unstable to reproduce with thread.
• Transparent PNG areas normally represent empty fabric, while solid areas may become stitches. Inspect the preview because anti-aliased edges can create unwanted shapes or stray stitches.
• Excessive density, repeated short stitches, dense overlaps, and long jumps can cause thread breaks, puckering, needle damage, and unnecessarily long sewing times.
• DST color-change records indicate sequence positions, not dependable thread-color names. Assign matching thread colors in the digitizing software or on the machine.
• Confirm the machine's maximum design size, hoop limits, supported DST behavior, jump and trim handling, color-stop behavior, and transfer media requirements. Different machines can interpret the same DST differently.
• Keep the original editable embroidery project, such as the Ink/Stitch, Hatch, Embird, or Wilcom file. The DST export is intended for machine transfer and is less suitable for detailed editing.
