What the PHB format is

PHB is a Brother PE-Design embroidery format associated with editable machine-embroidery designs. It can store stitch information and, depending on the originating PE-Design version, design data intended for further editing or machine export.

You may encounter PHB files in Brother PE-Design project archives, older Brother embroidery workflows, or collections created for Brother-compatible machines. PHB is not as broadly supported as PES or DST, and newer software versions may handle older PHB variants differently.

What the DST format is

DST is the Tajima stitch format used by many commercial embroidery machines and supported by most professional digitizing applications. It records movement commands such as stitches, jumps, and trims, plus color-change or stop commands.

DST is useful when sending a design to a Tajima-compatible machine, embroidery operator, or production system. Its broad machine compatibility is its main advantage, but it is primarily a stitch-output format rather than a fully editable design format.

How to convert PHB to DST

Using the built-in converter

1. Open the PHB-to-DST conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the file with the .phb extension.
3. Choose DST as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .dst file and inspect it in embroidery software before sending it to a machine.

This option does not require installed software. If the file is rejected, it may use an older or unsupported PHB variant; open it in Brother PE-Design first and export it from there.

Using Brother PE-Design

1. Open the PHB file in the Brother PE-Design version that created it, or in a version with compatible import support.
2. Check the hoop size, stitch order, thread colors, density, underlay, jumps, and trims.
3. Use File → Export or File → Write to Card/Machine, then select DST if that output is available in your edition.
4. Save the exported file with a new filename such as design.dst; keep the original PHB unchanged.

Some PE-Design releases use different import and export menu names, and some editions may require opening the design in the embroidery layout workspace before DST export.

Using dedicated embroidery software

Embird, Wilcom software, and other professional digitizing programs may import PHB and export DST, but support depends on the program version and the exact PHB structure. Use File → Open to import the PHB, verify the design visually, then use File → Save As or File → Export and choose DST.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion to DST can discard editable object information, original stitch-generation settings, appliqué instructions, branded thread names, and other PHB-specific metadata. The resulting file contains machine commands, so revise the design in its original digitizing format whenever possible rather than editing only the DST copy.

DST does not reliably preserve thread colors as displayed in the source file. Color-change records normally remain, but the machine or preview program may assign different thread colors. Set the thread sequence manually if color identity matters.

Inspect the converted design for excessive jumps, missing trims, short stitches, density changes, and an incorrect hoop boundary. Run a simulator or stitch a sample on similar fabric before production. Confirm that the destination machine supports the design's hoop dimensions, stitch count, file size, and stop behavior.
