Free online PHB to EXP converter

A machine or embroidery program may require EXP instead of the PHB file produced by Brother PE-Design. Converting it makes the design usable on compatible Melco-, Bernina-, and other EXP-supporting embroidery systems.

What the PHB format is

PHB is a Brother PE-Design embroidery format. It stores a digitized design with stitch data and, depending on the PE-Design version, information about design objects, thread colors, lettering, and editing parameters. You typically encounter PHB files when a design is created or saved in Brother PE-Design or related Brother/Baby Lock software.

What the EXP format is

EXP is an expanded machine-embroidery format associated with Melco and supported by various embroidery machines and editing applications. It primarily contains the stitch sequence, jump commands, and trimming or color-change instructions needed for production.

EXP is useful when the target machine or embroidery software specifically lists EXP as an input format. It is less suitable as an editing master because much of the original object structure, lettering information, and digitizing settings may be discarded during export.

How to convert PHB to EXP

Using 101convert

1. Open the PHB-to-EXP converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used free without installing software.
2. Upload the .phb file.
3. Select EXP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .exp file and open it in the target embroidery software for inspection.

Using Brother PE-Design

1. Open the PHB file in Brother PE-Design.
2. Check the hoop size, design dimensions, stitch count, thread sequence, and color stops.
3. Choose File → Export or File → Save As, depending on the PE-Design version.
4. Select the EXP machine format, set the destination folder, and save the file with an .exp extension.
5. Load the exported file in the target machine's software and verify its stitch preview before transferring it to the machine.

Embird and other professional embroidery editors can also perform this conversion when their installed format modules support both PHB import and EXP export. Use the application's machine-format export command rather than merely renaming .phb to .exp; changing the extension does not convert the stitch data.

Compatibility and limitations

PHB can contain editable design information that EXP does not preserve. Keep the original PHB as the master file and treat EXP as a machine-specific output file.

Check the converted design's hoop limits, orientation, stitch count, trims, jump stitches, and color-change order. EXP implementations differ, and some machines require a companion color or thread-information file, commonly an .inf file, to display colors correctly. If the machine rejects the file, use its manufacturer software to export EXP for that exact model or convert to the machine's documented native format.

Always run a preview or test stitch-out on comparable fabric. A format conversion cannot correct poor digitizing, excessive density, unsuitable underlay, or satin columns that are too wide for the selected material.
