A WEBP image must be converted to EXP when a machine-embroidery program or Melco-compatible embroidery machine requires stitch instructions rather than a web image. This is normally a digitizing task: the artwork must be turned into embroidery objects, stitch types, densities, and thread changes before it can be exported.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It stores pixels with lossy or lossless compression and may contain transparency, but it does not contain stitch paths, needle penetrations, thread colors, or sewing order.

Browsers and graphics programs commonly create or save WEBP files, including Google Chrome-based tools, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and image-conversion utilities. You may encounter WEBP when downloading a logo, illustration, product image, or other artwork from a website.

What the EXP format is

In machine embroidery, .exp commonly identifies the Melco embroidery design format. It stores machine-oriented stitch data, including movement coordinates, jump commands, and stops or color changes, rather than photographic or vector image data.

EXP is useful for Melco-compatible workflows and some embroidery applications that import or export expanded stitch files. Its compact structure preserves sewing instructions, but it does not retain the editable artwork, lettering objects, original fills, or digitizing settings found in a native project file.

How to actually convert WEBP to EXP

A direct file-format conversion is not sufficient. First digitize the WEBP in embroidery software, then export the resulting design as EXP.

  1. Open the WEBP in a digitizing application. Ink/Stitch, used with Inkscape, can provide a free desktop workflow; dedicated programs such as Hatch Embroidery, Embird, or Melco software offer more specialized digitizing controls.
  2. Scale the artwork to the intended hoop size and simplify it into separate embroidery regions. Remove photographic detail that cannot be represented by stitches.
  3. Trace each region as an embroidery object and assign an appropriate stitch type: satin for narrow columns and borders, fill stitches for broad areas, and running stitches for outlines or fine details.
  4. Set stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, stitch direction, trims, and the sewing order. Add thread colors and define stops where the machine must change thread.
  5. Preview the design in the software's stitch simulator. Check for excessive jumps, long unsupported satin columns, dense overlaps, tiny details, and objects that sew in the wrong order.
  6. Save the editable project in the application's native format before exporting. In Ink/Stitch, use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Lettering or the relevant embroidery-object tools while preparing the design, then choose the machine-file export command and select EXP.
  7. Open the exported .exp file in the target machine's software and verify the hoop, dimensions, thread sequence, and stitch count. Transfer it to the machine using the media and file workflow supported by that model.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software if its WEBP-to-EXP workflow is available for the file. Treat an automatically generated result as a starting point: raster-to-stitch conversion may produce unsuitable density, poor object order, excessive trims, or designs that require manual cleanup.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The WEBP's pixel dimensions do not determine embroidery quality. A small, clean logo with clear color boundaries is easier to digitize than a large photograph, and enlarging the image cannot restore missing detail.

EXP is not a complete interchange format. Different machine programs may interpret color-change, stop, trim, and end-of-design commands differently, and some machines require a machine-specific variant or a later conversion to another format. Confirm the exact EXP variant and hoop limits in the target software before stitching.

Always test-sew on similar fabric with the intended stabilizer and thread. Satin width, fill density, underlay, pull compensation, and fabric stretch affect the physical result even when the EXP file previews correctly.
