What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google and commonly created by web browsers, image editors, website content systems, and smartphone applications. It can use lossy or lossless compression and can preserve transparency, but it stores colored pixels rather than embroidery objects, thread changes, stitch paths, or hoop information.

A WEBP file may contain a logo, illustration, or photograph intended as source artwork. Its pixel dimensions and resolution do not directly determine suitable embroidery dimensions because stitch density, fabric type, thread thickness, and design complexity also affect the result.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates, thread-color blocks, color-change information, and design metadata used by compatible embroidery software and machines.

PEC is suitable for transferring a digitized design to an embroidery machine, but it is not an editable vector or image format. It does not preserve the original WEBP pixels, gradients, photographic detail, or web-image transparency as visual effects. A digitizer must represent those features with stitches, fills, outlines, and thread colors.

How to actually convert WEBP to PEC

The output still needs inspection in embroidery software because a bitmap-to-stitch conversion can produce unsuitable density, tiny details, or incorrect color areas.

1. Prepare the WEBP before uploading. Crop unnecessary margins, remove a background when it is not part of the design, and use a clear image with distinct color boundaries. Transparency can help isolate a logo, but it does not become a PEC background setting.
2. Choose the intended hoop size and finished design dimensions if the converter provides those options. Do not enlarge a low-resolution image and expect additional embroidery detail.
3. Convert and save the result with a descriptive filename such as logo_100mm.pec. Keep the original WEBP separately because the PEC file is a stitch interpretation, not a reversible copy.
4. Open the PEC in compatible embroidery software and check the stitch preview, design dimensions, color sequence, estimated stitch count, thread stops, and hoop boundaries. Resize or edit the design before transferring it to the machine.
5. If automatic conversion is inadequate, use a digitizing application such as Ink/Stitch, Embird, Hatch Embroidery, Brother PE-Design, or Wilcom. Import the WEBP as a reference, trace its shapes as embroidery objects, assign satin stitches or fill stitches, set underlay and density, define the sewing order, then export through File → Export or the application's machine-format menu as PEC.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is fundamentally a raster-to-stitch digitization, not a normal image-format rewrite. Photographs, soft shadows, gradients, very thin lines, and details smaller than the thread width usually require simplification or produce poor embroidery. Solid logos with separated color regions generally convert more predictably.

Review stitch density and underlay for the target fabric. Excessive density can cause puckering, thread breaks, and needle damage; insufficient density can leave gaps. Confirm that the chosen PEC file fits the machine's hoop and that its thread-color chart matches the thread brand or palette available at the machine.

PEC compatibility does not guarantee identical results across machines or software. Some programs rewrite PEC metadata, limit the number of thread colors, or scale designs during import. Run a test sew on fabric similar to the final item before production.
