A TIFF image must be converted into stitch data before a Brother or Baby Lock embroidery machine can use it as a PEC design. The conversion is therefore a digitizing process: the artwork is traced into embroidery objects, assigned stitch settings and thread colors, then exported as .pec.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, usually saved with the .tif or .tiff extension, is a raster image format used for scanned artwork, photographs, logos and print-quality graphics. Scanners, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo and many illustration or publishing applications can create TIFF files.

TIFF stores pixels rather than embroidery instructions. It can contain RGB, CMYK or grayscale data, multiple pages, transparency, layers or compression, but those properties do not define stitch types, thread changes, sewing order or hoop size. A TIFF is commonly encountered when a logo has been scanned or supplied as artwork for digitizing.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Brother and Baby Lock-compatible embroidery machines. A PEC file contains commands for needle movement, stitch placement, thread-color changes and design information rather than a pixel image.

PEC is useful when the target machine or its transfer software specifically accepts .pec. Its compact stitch data can be transferred and sewn directly after the design is checked for the machine's hoop and thread requirements. It is not intended for editing artwork like a TIFF, and exporting to PEC does not preserve photographic detail, layers or arbitrary color gradients.

How to actually convert TIFF to PEC

Use embroidery digitizing software such as Brother PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Embird Studio, Wilcom software or the free Ink/Stitch extension for Inkscape. These applications can use a TIFF as a reference or input image, but automatic tracing generally produces a starting point that requires manual cleanup.

  1. Open the TIFF in an image editor and crop away empty margins. Remove the background, increase contrast and simplify the artwork to a small number of solid shapes. Save a clean copy as logo.tif or, when transparency is needed, use a format supported by the digitizing program.
  2. Open the image in the embroidery application using a menu path such as File → Import Artwork, Insert → Image or the program's equivalent. Set the intended design width and height before digitizing.
  3. Trace each region as an embroidery object. Choose a fill stitch for broad areas, a satin column for narrow lettering and borders, and a running stitch for fine outlines. Define the sewing order so underlying shapes are sewn before details.
  4. Set stitch density, stitch length, underlay, pull compensation and tie-in or tie-off settings for the fabric. Assign thread colors from the software's thread chart and reduce unnecessary color changes.
  5. Select the target hoop and inspect the design in the software's stitch simulation. Check jump stitches, trims, excessive density, needle starts, small details and the final stitch count.
  6. Export with a menu path such as File → Export → PEC or Save As → PEC. Use a short filename such as logo.pec, copy it to the machine's supported media or transfer system, and verify the design again on the machine before sewing.

For a quick automatic attempt without installing software, the free converter on 101convert.com can be used when it supports the requested input and output. An automatically generated PEC file can contain poor stitch directions, unsuitable density or incorrect object segmentation, so it should be simulated and edited in embroidery software before production.

Quality, compatibility and limitations

Image resolution does not determine embroidery quality by itself. A high-resolution TIFF can still produce an unusable design if its shapes are too small, its edges are noisy or its colors require more detail than the machine and thread can reproduce. Text and narrow features often need enlargement, a suitable embroidery font or manual redrawing.

PEC has practical limits on design size, stitch count, color changes and machine-specific hoop compatibility. Different Brother-family machines and transfer applications may interpret hoop metadata or thread-color information differently. Keep the original digitized project file in the software's native format, because PEC is an output format and usually does not retain editable object boundaries or all design settings.

Always sew a test sample on fabric with the intended stabilizer and thread. Fabric stretch, thread thickness, needle choice, stitch density and pull compensation can change the result even when the PEC file itself is valid.
