What the PHB format is

PHB is a Brother PE-Design machine-embroidery format used to store embroidery design data. You may encounter it in files created or saved by Brother PE-Design, especially older versions of the software. Depending on the PE-Design version and the design source, a PHB file can retain information that is more editable than the final stitch-only machine format.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a Brother embroidery format intended for machine reading and stitch execution. It stores stitches, thread-color changes, and basic design information in a form supported by many Brother embroidery machines and compatible embroidery applications. PEC is suitable for transferring a finished design, but it is less appropriate than an editable project format for changing individual objects, lettering, or stitch parameters.

How to actually convert PHB to PEC

Using the built-in converter

1. Make a copy of the original .phb file before converting it.
2. Open the PHB-to-PEC converter on 101convert.com.
3. Upload the PHB file and select PEC as the output format.
4. Start the conversion, then download the resulting .pec file.
5. Open the PEC file in embroidery software or load it onto the intended Brother machine using the machine’s supported transfer method.

Using Brother PE-Design

1. Open the PHB file in the Brother PE-Design version that created it, or in a version that supports PHB import.
2. Check the hoop size, design dimensions, stitch count, thread colors, and orientation.
3. Choose File → Export or the version-specific command for exporting or writing an embroidery design.
4. Select PEC as the destination format and save the output with a new filename.
5. Reopen the exported file in PE-Design or another PEC-compatible program and inspect the stitch preview before transferring it to the machine.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion produces a stitch file, not a perfect copy of the PHB project structure. Editable objects, lettering settings, outlines, fill parameters, thread brands, and color names may be flattened or replaced by the PEC format’s stitch and color-change data.

Check the converted design for excessive density, short stitches, jumps, trims, missed color changes, and incorrect scaling. Do not resize the PEC file substantially after conversion; regenerate stitches from the original PHB design when possible. Confirm that the design fits the machine’s hoop and that the machine accepts the PEC variant produced by the converter.
