What the PHB format is

PHB is a Brother machine-embroidery design format associated with Brother PE-Design and related embroidery systems. It stores digitized stitch instructions, including stitch coordinates, color blocks, thread changes, and design dimensions. You may encounter PHB files in older Brother project collections, archived designs, or files transferred from Brother embroidery media.

PHB is not an ordinary image format: changing its extension does not convert the stitch data. The file must be decoded by embroidery software that supports PHB import.

What the JEF format is

JEF is the principal stitch format for Janome and Elna-compatible embroidery machines. It contains machine-readable needle movements, thread-change information, and design positioning data.

Use JEF when the destination machine or embroidery application specifically requires Janome format. JEF conversion can make a design usable on that hardware, but it does not automatically optimize density, underlay, pull compensation, or hoop placement for the new machine.

How to convert PHB to JEF

Using the converter on 101convert.com

1. Open the PHB-to-JEF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .phb file.
3. Select JEF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .jef file and open it in Janome-compatible embroidery software before transferring it to a machine.

This option requires no installed conversion software and is available free on the site. It will not repair a damaged PHB file or reconstruct missing stitch information.

Using desktop embroidery software

1. Open a PHB-capable embroidery editor such as Embird Studio and choose File → Open.
2. Select the PHB file and confirm the detected design size, stitch count, hoop, and thread blocks.
3. Choose the target Janome hoop and inspect the design in the stitch simulator. Resize only within the editor so stitch density and spacing can be recalculated.
4. Export through File → Save As or File → Export, select JEF, and save a new file rather than overwriting the PHB original.
5. Open the JEF file again, check the color sequence and machine limits, then transfer it using the Janome workflow supported by the target model.

Compatibility and quality limits

• PHB and JEF use different format structures, so conversion may alter thread colors, color-block order, trims, jump handling, or machine-specific metadata.
• Confirm that the converted design fits the target Janome hoop. A design that exceeds the hoop boundary may be rejected or clipped.
• Review very small lettering, dense fills, long jumps, and satin columns in a simulator; these areas are most likely to need manual editing after format conversion.
• Thread color names are not reliably preserved between Brother and Janome thread libraries. Match colors manually using the thread chart selected in the destination software.
• If the PHB file is incomplete, protected, or tied to obsolete Brother software, a converter may fail to read it. Exporting the design from the original Brother application to a more widely supported format before creating JEF may be necessary.
