Free online SHV to JEF converter

A Janome embroidery machine may reject a Husqvarna Viking design supplied as an .shv file. Converting it to .jef creates a machine-compatible file without redigitizing the design.

What the SHV format is

SHV is a proprietary Husqvarna Viking embroidery format associated mainly with older Viking machines and software, including 4D, 5D, 6D, and PREMIER+. It is also found in legacy design collections intended for Viking equipment.

An SHV file contains machine-readable embroidery data such as stitch coordinates, stitch order, color-change commands, and design metadata. It is not an image format: converting a PNG or JPEG to an embroidery file requires digitizing, while converting SHV to JEF translates existing stitch data.

What the JEF format is

JEF is the primary machine embroidery format used by many Janome models and some Elna models. It stores the stitch sequence, thread-color changes, and machine instructions required to sew the design.

JEF is appropriate when the destination machine specifically requires a .jef file. It is usually a compact machine file for USB or direct machine transfer, not an editable project file; object-level editing, lettering settings, and other authoring information may be lost during export.

How to convert the file online

1. Open the SHV-to-JEF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the original file with the .shv extension.
3. Select JEF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .jef file.
5. Copy it to the storage medium supported by the Janome or Elna machine, then open it on the machine or in embroidery software for inspection.

Keep the original SHV file unchanged. The converter runs in a browser, so no desktop installation is required; do not upload designs containing sensitive or licensed content unless the service's handling terms are acceptable.

How to convert the file with desktop software

Use an embroidery editor that explicitly supports SHV import and JEF export. Compatible versions of software such as Embrilliance may support these formats, but format support varies by product and version, so confirm both capabilities before purchasing or installing it.

1. Open the SHV file in the embroidery program.
2. Review the stitch preview, design dimensions, color stops, and stitch count.
3. Select a JEF export option, commonly File → Export or File → Save As, and choose .jef.
4. Choose the destination machine or hoop setting if the program provides one.
5. Save the editable project separately when possible; retain the exported JEF as the machine-transfer copy.

Do not assume that a general file utility or an application that opens JEF files can also import SHV. The software must decode the SHV source and write a valid JEF machine file.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Preview the converted design before sewing. Confirm the hoop selection, dimensions, rotation, placement, stitch count, stitch order, and color-change sequence.
• Check the destination machine's maximum hoop size. A successful conversion does not make an oversized design usable.
• Thread names and exact color values may not transfer between Viking and Janome palettes. Match the displayed sequence to the thread brand and colors available for the project.
• Conversion does not improve digitizing. Excessive density, long jumps, poor underlay, or unsuitable pull compensation in the SHV file can still cause thread breaks, puckering, or registration problems.
• Resizing, lettering, and other edits can alter stitch density and compensation. Make substantial changes in an embroidery editor and regenerate stitches rather than treating JEF as a scalable vector format.
• Some legacy SHV files contain data that newer converters cannot read, or may be incomplete, protected, or incorrectly renamed. Test another complete design from the same collection if the file is rejected.
• Janome formats such as JEF and JEF+ are not interchangeable on every model. Use ordinary .jef unless the machine documentation specifically requests another variant.
