What the SHV format is

SHV is a proprietary machine-embroidery format associated with Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines and software such as the 4D and 5D Embroidery Systems. It stores stitch coordinates, thread changes, color information, and related design data for stitching rather than displaying the design as a conventional image.

You typically encounter SHV files when transferring older Husqvarna Viking designs, opening archived machine files, or moving a design from Husqvarna Viking software to another embroidery application. SHV is not a suitable format for ordinary image editors, desktop publishing applications, or print workflows.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a raster image format supported by professional graphics, scanning, publishing, and archiving software. It can store high-resolution embroidery previews with lossless compression, multiple color channels, and, depending on the converter, transparency.

TIFF is useful for printed design sheets, catalogs, technical records, and image editing. It stores the visible rendering of the stitches; it does not store stitch order, needle movement, thread-change commands, hoop settings, or machine-specific instructions.

How to convert SHV to TIFF

The simplest method is the free converter on 101convert.com, which runs in a web browser and requires no software installation:

1. Open the SHV-to-TIFF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .shv embroidery file.
3. Select TIFF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .tif or .tiff file.

Use embroidery software that can read SHV when you need control over the rendered appearance. Open the design, set the hoop or preview area, choose the desired background and thread display, then use File → Export or Save as image and select TIFF if the program provides that option. If TIFF is unavailable, export PNG and convert that image to TIFF in an image editor such as GIMP using File → Export As.

Quality and compatibility

The TIFF is a rendered preview, so output quality depends on the selected pixel dimensions or resolution. Choose at least 300 dpi for ordinary printed documentation and a larger pixel size when the design will be enlarged; increasing TIFF resolution cannot restore detail absent from the SHV rendering.

Conversion may show thread colors differently because SHV color information is interpreted through a software thread palette. Verify the preview against the original design, especially where multiple thread brands use similar or approximate colors.

Converting back from TIFF to SHV is not a reliable reverse operation. A TIFF contains colored pixels, not stitch paths, so automatic digitizing would be required to recreate embroidery data and may produce incorrect stitch order, density, trims, or thread changes.
