Free online JEF to TIFF converter

A JEF design must be rendered as a TIFF image when a document, print, archive, or graphics workflow cannot read machine-embroidery files. This conversion produces a visual preview, not a stitchable embroidery design.

What the JEF format is

JEF is Janome's machine-embroidery format. It stores stitch coordinates, stitch order, thread-color information, jumps, trims, and design-related machine data for embroidery machines and compatible editing software.

Janome embroidery machines and software such as Janome Artistic Digitizer create JEF files. Embird, Hatch Embroidery, and other embroidery editors can also open or export JEF files. You commonly encounter JEF designs when transferring patterns to a Janome machine, editing purchased embroidery files, or storing digitized designs.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a raster image format used for printing, scanning, publishing, and long-term image storage. It can preserve high color depth, lossless compression, and image metadata, making it more suitable than JPEG for a detailed embroidery preview or an archived proof.

A TIFF contains colored pixels rather than stitch instructions. It cannot retain editable stitch paths, needle commands, thread changes, hoop settings, or machine-specific sequencing.

How to actually convert JEF to TIFF

Use the built-in online converter

1. Open the JEF-to-TIFF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .jef file and select TIFF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated TIFF.
4. Open the result in an image viewer or editor and check that the complete design, thread colors, and background appear correctly.

This method is suitable when you need a quick visual file without installing embroidery software. The result is a rendered image and cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a replacement for the original JEF.

Use desktop embroidery software for more control

1. Open the JEF in Embird, Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom software, or compatible Janome software.
2. Confirm the hoop size, design scale, thread colors, and stitch preview before rendering.
3. Use the program's preview, print, or image-export function to create a raster image. If it exports only PNG or another image format, save that intermediate file.
4. Convert the rendered image to TIFF in GIMP with File → Open, then File → Export As, or with ImageMagick:

If the embroidery application can export TIFF directly, use its image-export command and set the intended physical size and resolution before saving.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The TIFF dimensions come from the rendered preview, not directly from the JEF's stitch precision. Set the design's physical dimensions before exporting; changing a TIFF's DPI metadata later does not add detail. For printed documentation, render at approximately 300 dpi at the final print size, or higher when fine satin-stitch edges must be inspected.

Use a transparent background only if the target application supports TIFF transparency; otherwise select a solid background that contrasts with the thread colors. Lossless LZW or ZIP compression preserves pixels, while JPEG-compressed TIFF can introduce artifacts around narrow stitches.

Keep the original JEF with the TIFF. Only the JEF remains usable for resizing, recoloring, stitch-order changes, or machine transfer.
