What the JEF format is

JEF is a machine-embroidery format used primarily by Janome and compatible embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates, stitch commands, color changes, thread information, and machine or hoop data rather than pixels. Janome software and embroidery applications such as Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom products, and Ink/Stitch can open or export JEF files, depending on the product and version.

JEF files are used when downloading Janome-compatible designs, editing digitized embroidery, or transferring a design to a Janome machine. A JEF file is not a conventional image and cannot be displayed accurately by ordinary photo software without first being rendered.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format supported by web browsers, phones, office applications, photo editors, and most operating systems. It is suitable for displaying an embroidery preview, attaching a design to an email, placing it in a document, or creating a catalog thumbnail.

JPG uses lossy compression and stores colored pixels, not embroidery objects. It cannot retain stitch order, needle movements, color stops, hoop settings, or machine compatibility data. A JPG is therefore a visual representation, not a file that an embroidery machine can sew.

How to convert a JEF file to JPG

Using embroidery or graphics software

Set the pixel width, height, background color, and JPEG quality before saving. Menu names and export features vary by product edition.

Ink/Stitch with Inkscape is a free desktop alternative. Install compatible versions, import the JEF through the Ink/Stitch tools, and check the design in the stitch or simulation view. Export the rendered page or drawing as PNG through File → Export, then open the PNG in GIMP, Affinity Photo, Photoshop, or another image editor and use File → Export As to save a JPG. Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion rasterizes stitch instructions: the software simulates or draws stitch paths and saves the result as pixels. Satin stitches, dense fills, underlay, appliqué, lettering, and thread-color tables may render differently between programs. Some JEF variants or machine-specific data may not be supported by every application.

Choose the final pixel dimensions before exporting. Enlarging a small JPG cannot restore missing detail and may make thin satin stitches or lettering appear jagged. For print documentation, export at a sufficiently large size and use a high JPEG quality setting, typically around 90–100. Repeated JPEG resaving can add compression artifacts.

JPG has no transparency channel, so a transparent or unfilled embroidery background must become white or another solid color. Keep PNG when lossless quality or transparency is required.

Keep the original design.jef separately. The JPG cannot reliably be converted back into the original stitch sequence because different embroidery layouts can produce similar visible images.
