Free online JEF to PES converter

Janome machines and software commonly use .jef, while many Brother and Baby Lock machines require .pes. Converting the design lets you transfer an existing stitch file to a PES-compatible machine or editing program without recreating the embroidery.

What the JEF format is

JEF is Janome's native embroidery format. It stores machine stitch commands, color-change and stop information, thread-color data, design dimensions, and other machine-specific metadata. JEF files are produced by Janome software and used by Janome-compatible embroidery machines.

A JEF file contains digitized stitches, not the original editable artwork. Converting it cannot recover vector shapes, lettering objects, appliqué settings, or other source elements that were removed during digitization.

What the PES format is

PES is an embroidery format developed for Brother machines and also used by many Baby Lock models. It stores stitches, thread-color blocks, design metadata, and, depending on the version, multiple embroidery sections and machine-specific information.

PES compatibility depends on the file version, hoop dimensions, maximum design size, and machine model. A file that opens in Brother PE-Design, Palette, or another embroidery application may still be rejected by an older machine.

How to convert the file

2. Upload the .jef file.
3. Select PES as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .pes file when processing finishes.
5. Open the output in embroidery software and check its preview, hoop, dimensions, stitch count, color sequence, and thread stops before transferring it to the machine.

For local processing and more control over export settings, use embroidery software that explicitly supports both JEF import and PES export. 1. Open or import the JEF file with File → Open or Import.
2. Inspect the design in the stitch editor at its intended sewing size. Check the hoop placement, stitch count, thread sequence, trims, and color assignments.
3. Choose File → Save As or Export, select PES, and choose a PES version and hoop setting supported by the destination machine when those options are available.
4. Transfer the file using the machine's supported USB drive, cable, or network procedure, then use the machine preview before sewing.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion normally preserves the recorded stitch paths, but thread names and color mappings can change between Janome and Brother or Baby Lock software. Fills, satin columns, appliqué-related stops, lettering, trims, and very dense areas may also be interpreted differently.

Do not substantially resize a stitch file after conversion. Enlarging or shrinking fixed stitches can cause excessive density, gaps, distorted satin columns, weak underlay, or poor registration. For a major size change, resize the original artwork and re-digitize it.

Before sewing, confirm the PES version, hoop dimensions, maximum design area, number of color blocks, thread sequence, and needle requirements for the destination machine. If the machine rejects the file, export an older PES version or a hoop-specific version through compatible desktop software. Keep an original copy of the JEF file, and avoid uploading proprietary designs to any service whose storage or deletion policy you have not checked.
