Free online HUS to PES converter

A Brother or Baby Lock embroidery machine may require a PES file when a design is supplied in Husqvarna Viking's HUS format. Converting it also lets PES-focused embroidery software open the design for previewing, editing, or machine export.

What the HUS format is

HUS is a proprietary embroidery format associated mainly with Husqvarna Viking machines and software. A .hus file stores stitch instructions, including needle movements, stitch types, color changes, and stops, rather than a general-purpose bitmap image.

HUS files appear in embroidery collections, digitizing software, and older Husqvarna Viking design libraries. Depending on the file and software, they may also contain hoop, color, and machine-specific information. A stitch-only HUS file does not necessarily preserve the original editable objects, outlines, underlay settings, or lettering used to create the design.

What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery format used primarily by Brother and Baby Lock machines and supported by many embroidery editors. It stores stitch data, thread-color information, and, depending on the PES version and authoring program, design metadata and machine-specific settings.

PES is the appropriate export format when the destination machine specifies PES or when software provides better preview, editing, or transfer support for PES than for HUS. The required PES version and hoop limits depend on the target machine model.

How to convert HUS to PES

Using desktop embroidery software

Before exporting, select the destination Brother or Baby Lock model, PES version, and hoop size when those options are available. Confirm that the design fits the hoop, then inspect the stitch sequence, thread colors, trims, jumps, and color stops. Save a new PES copy instead of overwriting the HUS source.

Quality and compatibility checks

Changing HUS to PES changes the file container and machine-format metadata; it does not automatically redigitize or improve the design. Stitch geometry will often remain similar, but thread-brand mappings, color names, hoop metadata, trims, appliqué instructions, and other machine-specific commands may be altered or discarded.

Inspect the converted file at its intended size in an embroidery editor or stitch simulator. Check registration between sections, satin-column density, underlay, small lettering, jump stitches, thread stops, total stitch count, and the order of color changes. A file that opens successfully can still exceed the target machine's hoop, stitch-count, or format-version limits.

Resize or split an oversized design in embroidery software rather than relying on conversion alone. Use the PES version and hoop specification documented for the target machine, and test-stitch designs with dense fills, fine lettering, many color changes, or special trim commands on a fabric sample before production.
