Convert PES to HUS

A Husqvarna Viking machine or its companion software may require a .hus file when a design is supplied as .pes. Converting the stitch data avoids redigitizing, but the result must be checked for hoop limits, thread changes, trims, and machine compatibility.

What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery format associated with Brother and Baby Lock systems. It normally contains stitch coordinates, color-block order, thread information, and machine commands; some PES versions can also retain object or lettering data that compatible embroidery software can edit.

Brother-compatible machines, digitizers, and software such as Brother PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, and Embrilliance commonly use PES. A downloaded marketplace design may be supplied as PES even when it must eventually be converted for another brand of machine.

What the HUS format is

HUS is a machine-embroidery format associated primarily with Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines and older Viking transfer software. It stores stitch instructions, color sequencing, and supported machine commands in a format those systems can read.

Its main advantage is compatibility with equipment that specifically requires HUS. It is a stitch-oriented machine file, not a universal editable project format, and different Viking software or machine generations may support different design-size, hoop, and HUS-version limits.

How to convert PES to HUS

Using Embird

1. Install Embird with the Manager and conversion features, then open the folder containing the .pes file.
2. Select the design and use Embird’s format-conversion or save command. Choose HUS as the output format and save a new file such as design.hus.
3. Open the HUS file in Embird Editor or the target Viking software. Check its dimensions, stitch count, color blocks, thread sequence, and machine commands before transfer.

Embird is a suitable desktop option because it supports many commercial embroidery formats and lets you inspect the converted stitch plan. Hatch Embroidery and other commercial digitizing applications may also offer HUS export; confirm HUS support in the installed version before purchasing or relying on it.

Using Ink/Stitch

1. Install Inkscape and the Ink/Stitch extension.
2. Import the PES file with Ink/Stitch’s embroidery-file import function.
3. Inspect the imported stitch plan, then use Ink/Stitch’s export function and select HUS.
4. Open the exported file in an embroidery viewer or Viking software and save it to the machine’s supported transfer media only after verification.

Ink/Stitch is a no-cost option, but a stitch-file import cannot restore editable lettering, satin-column settings, appliqué objects, or original underlay when those details were not preserved in the PES file. Menu names can vary between Ink/Stitch releases.

Using an online converter

Services such as Convertio may offer PES-to-HUS conversion when both formats are listed on the service’s current format page. Upload only non-confidential designs, download the result, and inspect it in embroidery software before sewing. Online services may reject large files, discard thread metadata, alter color information, or produce an untested file; desktop software is preferable for production work.

Quality and compatibility checks

Conversion normally preserves the stitch path, not the original digitizing objects. If the source is already a stitch-only PES file, text, fills, satin columns, appliqué boundaries, underlay, and density settings may no longer be independently editable. Conversion also does not correct poor digitizing, excessive density, unsuitable pull compensation, or bad thread sequencing.

• Confirm that the design fits the selected Viking hoop and that the target machine supports the HUS file variant and maximum stitch count.
• Check the number and order of color changes, thread colors, trims, jump stitches, first and last needle positions, and total stitch count.
• Simulate the file in embroidery software and inspect small lettering, narrow satin columns, dense fills, and overlapping areas before sewing.
• Keep the original .pes file and save the converted file under a new name.

Do not rename design.pes to design.hus. Changing the extension does not change the internal embroidery format.
