What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery design format associated with Brother embroidery machines and PE-Design software. It stores stitch commands, thread-color information, hoop or design metadata, and sometimes multiple design elements. Brother PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom software, and other embroidery applications can create or edit PES files. You typically encounter PES files when downloading designs, transferring them to a Brother-compatible machine, or opening them in embroidery digitizing software.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format for displaying a fixed preview or a simple animation. It is supported by web browsers and many messaging, catalog, and document applications. GIF files use a palette of up to 256 colors, support optional transparency, and are usually smaller than full-color images for simple line art. GIF is suitable for showing the approximate appearance of an embroidery design, but it cannot store stitch order, needle movement, thread changes, hoop settings, or machine instructions.

How to convert PES to GIF

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the PES-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used for free without installing software.
2. Upload the .pes file.
3. Select GIF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .gif file when processing finishes.

The converter renders the stitch design as an image. It may use the design's thread colors, but the GIF does not preserve the original thread-brand color codes as usable machine data.

Using desktop embroidery software

1. Open the PES file in embroidery software that supports PES, such as PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, or Wilcom software.
2. Check the hoop size, design orientation, thread colors, and background before exporting a preview.
3. Use the program's preview or image-export function to save a rendered image, preferably as PNG. The exact command is software-specific; look under File → Export, Save as image, or the design-preview options.
4. Convert the exported image to GIF with an image editor or ImageMagick:

If the embroidery application exports SVG instead, rasterize it at the required preview dimensions before creating the GIF. A static image editor can also open the PNG and use File → Export or Save as with GIF selected.

Quality and compatibility limits

GIF shows a rendered view rather than actual thread coverage. Small stitches, satin columns, and close color shades can merge after palette reduction, especially in a small image. Export at the final display size or render larger and reduce it once to preserve cleaner edges.

Animated GIF is not a standard PES conversion target. If you need to show stitch progression, create separate rendered frames from embroidery software and assemble them as an animation; an ordinary conversion normally produces one static frame.

Keep the original PES file for machine use. A GIF cannot be converted back into a reliable stitch design because raster pixels contain no trustworthy information about stitch order, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, or thread changes.
