What the EXP format is

EXP is an expanded machine-embroidery format associated especially with Melco-compatible embroidery systems. It records needle movements, jumps, and stitch blocks rather than storing a normal bitmap image.

Embroidery digitizing programs and machine-workflow tools create or export EXP files for sewing machines and embroidery controllers. You may encounter them after downloading a design, transferring a design from a digitizer, or exporting a pattern for a Melco-compatible machine.

EXP files generally do not preserve the complete visual information needed for a finished picture. Thread colors may be missing or require manual assignment, and the file does not contain photographic pixels.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format supported by web browsers, image viewers, office software, and messaging tools. It is suitable for a small, widely compatible preview of an embroidery design.

GIF supports indexed color with a maximum of 256 colors per frame, transparency, and simple animation. It is useful for line art and stitch previews with limited colors, but it is not an embroidery-machine format and cannot store needle commands, hoop settings, stitch density, or editable thread objects.

Check the GIF at its intended display size. Enlarging a small preview creates blurred or blocky edges, while the original EXP remains the file required for editing or sewing.
