What the SEW format is

SEW is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Janome and compatible Elna embroidery systems. It stores embroidery information such as stitch coordinates, stitch order, thread changes, colors, and design dimensions. Janome Digitizer and other embroidery editors can create or export SEW files, and older Janome-compatible machines may accept them directly.

You encounter SEW files when downloading older Janome designs, moving a design between embroidery editors, or preparing a pattern for a compatible machine. The format describes needle movements rather than a normal bitmap image, so a standard image viewer usually cannot display it correctly.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format useful for small previews, web pages, product catalogs, and documents. It is widely supported, can use transparent backgrounds, and compresses simple artwork efficiently.

A GIF made from an embroidery design shows a rendered preview of the pattern. It does not retain stitch commands, needle-entry points, thread-change instructions, hoop metadata, or machine compatibility information. GIF supports a maximum of 256 colors, so thread shades may be approximated.

How to convert SEW to GIF

1. Keep the original .sew file unchanged and copy it if you need to preserve the machine design.
2. Open the SEW-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com.
3. Upload the SEW file. If the service provides preview settings, choose the design orientation, background color, scale, and output dimensions.
4. Select GIF as the output format and start the conversion.
5. Download the generated GIF and inspect it at its intended display size. Check that the complete design, thread colors, and any lettering are visible.

For local processing, open the SEW file in an embroidery editor or viewer with SEW support, such as Embird or Janome Digitizer, then use the program's image-preview or export function. The exact menu path varies; look under File → Export, Save as image, or a preview command and select GIF if offered. Some embroidery applications export PNG or JPEG instead; convert that rendered image to GIF only after confirming that the preview looks correct.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion renders stitches into pixels, so enlarging the GIF cannot recover detail that was not included in the output dimensions. Use a larger canvas when the image will be printed, and use transparent background only when the target application handles GIF transparency correctly.

Small color differences are normal because embroidery thread palettes and GIF's indexed 256-color palette do not correspond exactly. A GIF preview also cannot show fabric texture, thread sheen, actual stitch density, or how the design will look after sewing.

Do not send the GIF to an embroidery machine. Keep the original SEW file, or export a machine format supported by the specific machine, when the design must be stitched.
