What the PHC format is

PHC is a Brother machine-embroidery design format associated with Brother PE-Design software. It stores stitch sequences, thread colors, placement information, and other data needed to sew a design; it is not a normal bitmap image.

You may encounter PHC files exported by Brother PE-Design or supplied with Brother embroidery projects. A PHC file is intended for embroidery software or compatible Brother machines, not for ordinary image viewers.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster-image format supported by web browsers, catalog systems, messaging applications, and basic graphics programs. It supports up to 256 colors, transparency, and simple animation, making it suitable for small design previews rather than production embroidery.

A PHC-to-GIF conversion renders the stitch design as an image. The resulting GIF does not contain editable stitches, thread commands, hoop settings, or machine instructions, so it cannot replace the original PHC file for sewing.

How to convert PHC to GIF

Use the online converter

1. Open the PHC-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the .phc file from your computer.
3. Choose GIF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .gif preview and open it in a browser or image viewer.

The online method is appropriate when you need a quick visual preview and do not need to edit individual stitches. Keep the original PHC file separately for later machine use.

Use embroidery software and a graphics editor

1. Open the PHC file in Brother PE-Design or another embroidery application that explicitly supports PHC.
2. Set the desired hoop view, stitch display, background, and preview scale.
3. Use the program's image export command, such as File → Export, and save the preview as PNG, BMP, or JPEG if direct GIF export is unavailable.
4. Open the exported image in GIMP or another raster editor and choose File → Export As to save it as design.gif.

With ImageMagick, an exported PNG can be converted using magick preview.png -colors 256 design.gif. ImageMagick cannot interpret PHC stitch data directly; an embroidery application must render the design first.

Quality and compatibility limitations

GIF is limited to 256 colors and may show visible color banding in thread previews. Use a larger export size before reducing it to GIF, and retain PNG when transparent backgrounds or more accurate thread colors are required.

Different embroidery programs may render thread brands, appliqué areas, trims, and three-dimensional effects differently. The GIF shows only the application's rendering and is not a reliable technical representation of the final sewn result.
