What the PHC format is

PHC is a Brother machine-embroidery design format. It stores stitch commands, thread-color information, needle movements, and design geometry for embroidery equipment and software in the Brother ecosystem. You may encounter PHC files exported by Brother embroidery software or copied from embroidery-machine media.

PHC is not a general-purpose image format. Photo editors and standard document applications normally cannot display its stitch data correctly, and renaming the extension does not convert it.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, commonly saved with the .tif or .tiff extension, stores raster images. It supports high resolution, multiple color modes, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP, making it suitable for printed design sheets, catalogues, technical records, and archival copies.

A TIFF made from PHC is a rendered image of the embroidery design. It does not retain executable stitches, thread-change commands, hoop settings, or machine-specific embroidery instructions, so it cannot replace the original PHC file for sewing.
