Free online PES to TIFF converter

TIFF is useful when a machine-embroidery design must be supplied as a raster preview for printing, documentation, cataloging, or image editing. Converting a PES file to TIFF renders its stitches as pixels; it does not create another editable embroidery file.

What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery design format associated with Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates, thread-color information, design sections, hoop data, and format-specific metadata. Brother PE-Design, Baby Lock software, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom, and similar digitizing programs create or export PES files.

You encounter PES files when downloading embroidery designs, transferring designs to a machine, or exchanging stitch data between embroidery applications. A PES file is intended for stitching equipment and embroidery software, not ordinary image editors.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a raster image format used for high-quality print files, scanned artwork, technical records, and archival images. It supports large dimensions, multiple color depths, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP, so it avoids the generation loss associated with JPEG.

A TIFF made from PES shows the design as a visual image, usually with simulated thread colors and stitch lines. It contains no usable stitch commands, thread-change sequence, machine settings, or hoop instructions. Use TIFF when the recipient needs a printable or editable picture rather than a file for an embroidery machine.

How to convert PES to TIFF

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the PES-to-TIFF converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
2. Upload the .pes file and select TIFF as the output format.
3. Choose the output dimensions or resolution if those options are provided. Set the design at its intended physical size; increasing DPI after rasterization does not add detail.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .tif or .tiff file.

This workflow produces a rendered preview. It cannot preserve the PES file as an editable stitch design.

Using embroidery software and a desktop image converter

1. Open the PES file in PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom, or another application that supports the file's PES version.
2. Check the hoop boundary, design size, thread colors, background, and stitch visibility. Export the design as a high-resolution PNG or another raster image using the program's File → Export or Save as image command.
3. Convert the exported image with ImageMagick, for example: magick design.png -compress LZW design.tiff. Use -density 300 before the input filename when the TIFF will be printed at 300 DPI: magick -density 300 design.png -compress LZW design.tiff.

If the embroidery application can export TIFF directly, select File → Export → TIFF and choose LZW or ZIP compression. Exporting from the embroidery application first is preferable when you need control over thread rendering, canvas size, or transparent background.

Quality and compatibility limits

The visual result depends on the renderer: some programs draw individual stitches, while others display smooth filled shapes. Verify the TIFF at its final print size because a small PES preview exported at low resolution will have jagged stitch lines when enlarged.

Use RGB TIFF for general graphics work and grayscale or bilevel TIFF only when the receiving workflow requires it. Preserve the original PES separately because TIFF cannot be converted back into reliable stitch data; automatic re-digitizing would have to infer stitch angles, densities, underlay, trims, thread changes, and machine commands from pixels.

Older embroidery programs may reject newer PES revisions or omit unsupported metadata. If the design does not open, save or export it from a compatible embroidery application to an older PES version before rendering the TIFF.
