What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates, sewing order, thread-color information, trims, jumps, stops, and design metadata. Embroidery software such as Brother PE-Design, Baby Lock Palette, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, and Wilcom EmbroideryStudio can create or edit PES files.

You encounter PES files when downloading designs for a compatible embroidery machine, transferring a design from digitizing software, or preparing a design for a hoop-specific sewing operation. The file contains production instructions rather than ordinary vector artwork.

What the EPS format is

EPS is a vector-artwork container commonly used to exchange outlines, fills, and text with illustration, layout, and digitizing applications. In machine embroidery workflows, an EPS file is normally source artwork for digitizing, not a format that an embroidery machine sews directly.

Vector artwork can be scaled without the pixelation of a raster image, edited by shape and color, and imported into software such as CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch, or Embird. EPS does not normally preserve PES-specific information such as stitch density, underlay, needle order, trims, machine stops, or thread assignments.

How to actually convert PES to EPS

Using the online converter

1. Make a copy of the original .pes file.
2. Open the PES-to-EPS converter on 101convert.com, upload the copy, and select EPS as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .eps file when processing finishes.
4. Open the EPS in a vector application and inspect the stitch paths, colors, and scale before sending it to a digitizer or print workflow.

This route requires no installed software, but the result may be a visual tracing of the stitch data rather than clean, editable design geometry.

Using embroidery and vector software

1. Open the PES file in embroidery software that supports PES import, such as Embird, Hatch Embroidery, or Wilcom EmbroideryStudio.
2. Set the correct hoop, design scale, and thread display, then inspect the design in the stitch simulator. Do not resize the design during export unless you accept changed stitch spacing and proportions.
3. Use the program's vector or artwork export command and choose EPS if that option is available. Menu names vary; look under File → Export, Save As, or Export artwork.
4. If the embroidery program exports SVG or PDF but not EPS, open that intermediate vector file in Inkscape, CorelDRAW, or Adobe Illustrator and use File → Save As or File → Export to create .eps.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A PES-to-EPS conversion is not a lossless format change because PES and EPS describe different kinds of data. PES describes how a needle moves; EPS describes geometric artwork. A converter must either draw the stitch runs as many line segments or approximate the visible design with new outlines.

The resulting EPS may contain thousands of short paths, overlapping thread runs, jumps, and machine artifacts. Such a file can be unsuitable for clean color editing, laser cutting, screen printing, or re-digitizing. It also cannot reproduce the original underlay, pull compensation, stitch types, or intended sewing sequence as editable vector objects.

For a production-quality EPS, obtain the original artwork used to digitize the design or redraw the design in vector software. Use the converted file only as a visual reference unless the receiving digitizer confirms that its path structure is usable. An EPS file produced from PES is generally not machine-loadable; export the design back to PES or the machine's required stitch format after any embroidery edits.
