What the PCM format is

In machine embroidery, PCM is a Pfaff embroidery design format used by older Pfaff embroidery machines and Pfaff design software. It stores digitized stitch commands, including stitch order, needle movements, color changes, and design information rather than a normal image.

You may encounter PCM files in archives from legacy Pfaff systems or when receiving designs exported from older Pfaff software. PCM is not the PCM audio format in this context.

What the EPS format is

For machine embroidery, EPS refers to an embroidery design format supported by some embroidery machines and specialist design programs. It contains machine-readable stitch information and may include thread-color and hoop-related data.

Embroidery EPS is separate from Encapsulated PostScript, the graphics format used by illustration and publishing applications. Illustrator, Inkscape, and other vector editors generally cannot interpret an embroidery EPS as stitch data.

EPS is useful when a receiving machine or embroidery application requires that format. It can also provide a practical interchange format for older or manufacturer-specific workflows, but it does not automatically make a design compatible with every machine; hoop size, stitch limits, and supported thread data still apply.

How to convert PCM to EPS

1. Make a copy of the original PCM file so the source remains unchanged.
2. Open the PCM-to-EPS converter on 101convert.com, which can be used without installing software.
3. Choose the PCM file as the input. Confirm that the selected conversion is the machine-embroidery PCM format, not an audio format.
4. Select EPS as the output format and start the conversion.
5. Download the converted file and open it in the destination embroidery software. Check the design preview, stitch count, thread sequence, hoop dimensions, and color changes before sending it to a machine.

If the file is rejected, it may use a PCM revision or variant unsupported by the converter. In that case, use a desktop embroidery editor or digitizing program that explicitly lists both Pfaff PCM import and embroidery EPS export; general graphics software is not an alternative.

Quality and compatibility limitations

PCM and embroidery EPS are stitch-based formats, so conversion does not recreate editable outlines or object-level lettering. Any conversion can alter thread-color labels, trim commands, jump handling, or machine-specific metadata.

Inspect the converted design at high zoom and verify that the first and last needle positions, satin columns, fills, density, and underlay remain suitable. Confirm the target machine's maximum hoop area and file limits before stitching; a format conversion cannot resize a design safely without recalculating stitch density.

Keep the original PCM file as the archival master. Save the EPS with a clear filename and test it on the intended machine or its manufacturer software before production.
