What the SHV format is

SHV is a proprietary embroidery-design format associated with Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines and software. It can contain stitch coordinates, color changes, thread information, design size, and machine-specific embroidery instructions.

SHV files are commonly created or exported by Husqvarna Viking systems such as 3D Embroidery System and PREMIER+ Embroidery, then transferred to compatible embroidery machines. They are intended for stitching, not for page layout or general-purpose vector illustration.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a graphics format used by applications such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and some prepress workflows. It can contain scalable vector paths, text, fills, strokes, and a preview image.

EPS is suitable when a design must be resized for print, placed in a page-layout document, or edited as artwork. It does not preserve embroidery-specific data such as stitch density, needle movement order, trims, underlay, hoop settings, or machine thread stops.

How to convert SHV to EPS

1. Open the SHV-to-EPS converter on 101convert.com; it works in a web browser and does not require installed software.
2. Select or drag the .shv file into the upload area.
3. Choose EPS as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .eps file and open it in a compatible graphics application.
5. Check the artwork at the intended print size. If the EPS contains only a preview or flattened image, it will not behave like fully editable vector artwork.

For a locally controlled workflow, first open the SHV in compatible Husqvarna Viking embroidery software and export an available outline format such as SVG or DXF. Open that intermediate file in Inkscape, check the paths and colors, then use File → Save a Copy and select EPS. Inkscape cannot normally interpret SHV stitch data directly, so an embroidery application or a converter that supports SHV is required for the first step.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is inherently lossy because EPS has no standard representation for embroidery instructions. A converted design may show thread paths as lines, filled regions, or a rasterized preview; the result depends on how the converter interprets the stitch data.

Do not send the EPS back to an embroidery machine expecting the original design. Keep the original SHV file for sewing, and use the EPS only for artwork, proofing, printing, or editing. Verify dimensions, color separation, transparency, and line joins in the target graphics application before production.
