What the SHV format is

SHV is a proprietary embroidery-design format associated with Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines and software. It stores stitch coordinates, thread colors, sequencing, and design metadata rather than ordinary vector curves or pixels.

You may encounter SHV files exported by Husqvarna Viking embroidery systems, PREMIER+ embroidery software, and older 5D embroidery applications. An SHV file is intended for stitching; it does not normally contain the clean outlines, fills, layers, and typography expected in an AI document.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector format. It is used for logos, illustrations, cutting artwork, packaging, signage, and other graphics that must remain editable and scale without pixelation.

An AI file can preserve vector paths, fills, strokes, layers, clipping masks, and editable type. It is therefore useful when the SHV design needs substantial graphic editing or must be delivered to a print or design workflow.

How to convert SHV to AI

Online conversion: use the SHV conversion page on 101convert.com, upload the file, choose AI as the output format if it is offered, and download the result. No software installation is required. Because SHV contains stitch data rather than native vector artwork, inspect the converted file before using it for production.

Higher-control desktop workflow:

1. Open the SHV file in compatible Husqvarna Viking software such as PREMIER+ 2 Embroidery or another embroidery application that supports SHV.
2. Export a preview as a high-resolution PNG, TIFF, or BMP. Use the largest available dimensions and enable the correct thread colors or background transparency.
3. Open the exported image in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open.
4. Select the image and use Window → Image Trace. Choose Color for multicolor artwork or Black and White for a single-color design.
5. Adjust Colors, Paths, Corners, and Noise, then select Expand to turn the tracing into editable paths.
6. Clean overlapping paths, remove the preview background, correct thread-color approximations, and save with File → Save As using the .ai extension.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This is not normally a lossless format conversion. SHV records stitch movements and embroidery-specific settings; AI requires geometric outlines. A direct converter must reconstruct shapes from stitch paths, and dense stitching, underlay, satin columns, pull compensation, and thread trims cannot be represented faithfully as ordinary Illustrator artwork.

Image Trace may produce many unnecessary anchor points or merge nearby thread colors. For a logo or print-quality result, redraw important outlines manually in Illustrator or obtain the original vector artwork instead of tracing the SHV preview. The resulting AI file is suitable for graphic editing, but it will not automatically retain machine-ready stitch instructions.
