Free online EXP to AI converter

Adobe Illustrator requires AI artwork, while embroidery machines and digitizing software commonly use EXP stitch files. Converting EXP to AI supplies artwork for editing, print layouts, branding, or redigitizing, but it does not produce another machine-ready embroidery file.

What the EXP format is

EXP is the Melco expanded embroidery format. It stores digitized stitch instructions such as needle-movement coordinates and, depending on the file variant and software, color-change or stop information. Melco systems, compatible embroidery machines, and embroidery digitizing applications use EXP files.

EXP contains the output of digitizing, not the original vector objects, lettering, outlines, or editable design layers. It cannot reliably recreate the source artwork. Thread colors and machine functions may also be incomplete or interpreted differently by different embroidery programs.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native vector artwork format. It can preserve editable paths, fills, strokes, layers, and layout information when those objects are created or exported correctly. Illustrator is the main application for editing AI files; other programs may support only part of the format.

AI is suitable for scalable logos, print artwork, mockups, and a redraw or redigitizing reference. An embroidery machine normally cannot stitch an AI file directly. AI does not preserve EXP-specific properties such as stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, needle sequence, or other machine settings.

Convert EXP to AI online

1. Open the EXP-to-AI converter on 101convert.com; the conversion can be performed free without installing software.
2. Upload the embroidery file with the .exp extension, not a thumbnail or exported preview image.
3. Select AI as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .ai file and open it in Adobe Illustrator.
5. Inspect the artwork at high zoom. Check object boundaries, color separation, small lettering, overlaps, and missing details before editing or redigitizing.

Convert EXP with desktop software

1. Import design.exp into embroidery digitizing software that supports Melco EXP.
2. Use the application’s stitch view, object view, or preview to verify the design and thread-color sequence.
3. If the application provides vector export, use File → Export and choose SVG or EPS. SVG is generally preferable for editable paths; EPS is useful when the receiving workflow requires it.
4. Open the exported SVG or EPS in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open.
5. Correct paths, colors, scale, and grouping as needed, then use File → Save As and choose Adobe Illustrator format.

Wilcom EmbroideryStudio and other professional digitizing applications can import EXP, but available export formats and menu names depend on the product edition and version. Use a program only if it explicitly supports EXP import and vector or PDF artwork export; ordinary Illustrator cannot interpret EXP stitch data.

If the embroidery program cannot export vector artwork, export a high-resolution PDF or image preview and trace it in Illustrator. Tracing creates newly drawn artwork, not a recovery of the original embroidery geometry.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is inherently lossy: EXP describes stitch paths, whereas AI describes geometric artwork. Satin columns, fill areas, tiny lettering, overlaps, trims, and stitch effects may become fragmented paths, simplified shapes, or inaccurate color regions. The resulting AI file is often a visual reference or redigitizing base rather than a fully editable equivalent of the design.

For production embroidery, keep the original EXP and use an embroidery application to convert it to the machine format required by the target equipment. Recheck hoop size, thread sequence, needle assignments, density, underlay, pull compensation, and trims, then simulate or test-stitch the regenerated design before production.
