Free online DSB to AI converter

DSB files are usually embroidery stitch designs, while AI files are Adobe Illustrator artwork. Conversion is needed when a stitch design must be edited as vector artwork, placed in a print layout, or supplied to a designer using Illustrator.

What the DSB format is

DSB is commonly a Barudan embroidery-machine format. It stores machine instructions such as stitch coordinates, thread changes, color order, trims, jumps, and stops rather than editable vector outlines. DSB files are created or exported by embroidery software such as Wilcom, Pulse, Hatch, and Embird, and appear when designs are prepared for Barudan-compatible machines.

A DSB file does not normally contain the original artwork, font information, smooth Bézier curves, or print-ready fills. Its stitch paths describe how to sew the design, so recovering an exact vector original is generally impossible.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector format. It stores paths, fills, strokes, text, layers, gradients, and other Illustrator objects that can be edited without resolution loss. AI is appropriate for logos, print layouts, technical illustrations, and artwork that must be resized or modified in Illustrator.

AI is not an embroidery-machine format. An AI file can represent the visual appearance of an embroidery design, but it will not preserve the DSB file's stitch sequence or machine settings unless those details are recreated separately.

How to actually convert DSB to AI

Online conversion

1. Open the converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Upload the DSB file and select AI as the output format if that option is offered.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting file.
4. Open the AI output in Adobe Illustrator and inspect paths, colors, scale, and missing details before using it for production.

Online conversion can only produce an AI representation if the service can interpret the embroidery data and generate vector or traced artwork. It cannot restore vector shapes that were discarded before the DSB file was created.

Higher-control desktop workflow

1. Open the DSB in an embroidery editor such as Wilcom, Hatch, Pulse, or Embird.
2. Check the design's hoop size, units, thread colors, stitch density, and orientation. Export a preview as SVG, EPS, or PDF if the software provides a vector export; otherwise export a high-resolution PNG.
3. Open the vector file in Illustrator with File → Open, then review the imported layers and paths.
4. For a PNG preview, use Window → Image Trace, select an appropriate color mode, adjust Paths, Corners, and Noise, then choose Expand. Delete tracing artifacts and rebuild important shapes with the Pen tool.
5. Save the result with File → Save As and choose Adobe Illustrator (*.AI).

Quality and compatibility limitations

A stitch-to-vector conversion is an interpretation, not a lossless format change. Satin columns, fill patterns, underlay, thread density, and stitch direction may become ordinary solid shapes or disappear entirely. The resulting AI artwork may look different from the sewn design, especially at small sizes or where thread texture defines the appearance.

Use the original artwork, if available, instead of tracing DSB data. If the AI file is intended for embroidery, do not send it directly to a machine: re-digitize the vector artwork in embroidery software and export a machine format such as DSB after checking stitch order, trims, density, and hoop limits.
