Free online DSB to DXF converter

A Barudan embroidery design may need conversion when a CAD or digitizing program accepts DXF but cannot open the machine-ready DSB file. DXF can transfer approximate stitch geometry or outlines, but it does not preserve the complete embroidery design.

What the DSB format is

DSB is a machine-embroidery stitch format commonly associated with Barudan embroidery machines and compatible digitizing software. It stores machine instructions such as needle coordinates, jumps, stops, and color changes rather than editable vector artwork.

DSB files are produced when an embroidery design is exported for Barudan-compatible equipment or received from an embroidery operator. Embroidery editors such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio and Embird may import DSB, but support depends on the product edition, version, and installed format modules. The original digitizing project, if available, is more editable than the exported DSB file.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is a CAD interchange format for 2D entities such as lines, polylines, arcs, and circles. AutoCAD and many other CAD, vector, and embroidery-digitizing applications can open DXF files.

In machine embroidery, DXF is normally used as source geometry for editing or re-digitizing, not as a machine-ready stitch format. It does not normally retain DSB information such as stitch density, underlay, stitch type, sewing order, thread brand, needle assignment, trims, or machine settings.

How to convert DSB to DXF

Desktop conversion with embroidery software

Use an embroidery editor that supports DSB import and provides a DXF export function. The exact menu names differ by software and version.

1. Open the embroidery editor and choose File → Open, then select the .dsb file.
2. Run the stitch simulation and inspect the design for missing sections, incorrect colors, registration problems, and unwanted jumps.
3. Use File → Export or File → Save As and select DXF, if that export is available.
4. Set the output unit to millimetres when the destination application uses metric measurements. Select a DXF version supported by the receiving program; ASCII DXF R12 is often a practical compatibility choice.
5. Open the exported file in the target CAD or digitizing application, confirm its scale, and inspect the geometry at the intended size.

DSB import and DXF export are separate capabilities, so verify both in the documentation or trial version of the chosen embroidery editor. If the editor cannot export DXF, the file creator may need to perform the conversion with software that supports both operations.

Quality and compatibility limits

A DSB file contains discrete needle movements, not the original vector shapes. Conversion commonly represents stitch runs as lines or polylines, producing many short segments in dense areas. Jumps and trims may become unwanted lines unless the converter filters them.

Color changes may be represented by separate layers or entity groups, but thread names, underlay, stitch type, density, sequencing, trims, and machine settings can be lost. Some applications also interpret DXF units or scale differently, so check a known dimension before editing or re-digitizing.

Keep the DSB file and the original digitizing project. Use DXF for approximate geometry, outlines, or transfer to CAD; use the native embroidery project or DSB file when the design must retain stitch information for machine production.
