What the DSB format is

DSB is a binary embroidery stitch format associated primarily with Barudan commercial embroidery systems. It stores needle movements, stitch blocks, color-change commands, and machine instructions rather than a photograph, vector image, or editable digitizing project.

DSB files are used by commercial embroidery digitizers, production shops, and operators transferring designs between Barudan-compatible systems. Color names and thread-chart assignments may be incomplete or interpreted differently by each program, because the file can preserve color-change positions without preserving the original thread brand or exact color.

What the PES format is

PES is an embroidery format developed for Brother and used by many Brother- and Baby Lock-compatible applications and machines. It can contain stitch data, thread changes, design information, and machine-specific settings. PES is widely supported by embroidery design software, making it practical for previewing, editing, and transferring designs to compatible machines.

PES revisions are not interchangeable in every situation. The required revision, hoop size, and supported features depend on the receiving machine or application; a PES file that opens in software may still exceed the machine’s hoop limits or use unsupported functions.

How to convert DSB to PES

Correct thread names or colors manually when the DSB file does not contain reliable thread-chart data.

Confirm that the design fits the target hoop without resizing. Enlarging or reducing a stitch file substantially can make density, underlay, pull compensation, and column widths unsuitable; changes of roughly 10–20% or more commonly require redigitizing rather than simple scaling. A converted file can retain usable stitch geometry while losing Barudan-specific commands or requiring manual correction of trims and other machine functions.

Preview the PES file in the software intended to send it to the machine, then verify the machine’s supported PES revision and maximum stitch, color-change, and hoop limits. Run a test stitch on comparable fabric when the design is production-critical.
