Free online VP3 to PES converter

A Brother or Baby Lock embroidery machine may require .pes when a design is supplied as .vp3 for a Pfaff or Husqvarna Viking system. Converting it allows compatible machine software to read the stitch pattern without digitizing the design again.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a stitch-based embroidery format used primarily by Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking machines and software, including mySewnet and older 5D or Premier+ systems. It stores needle movements, color blocks, jumps, trims, design dimensions, and thread information rather than editable vector artwork.

A VP3 file contains the embroidery instructions generated during digitizing. It does not normally provide the original outlines, fills, or other design objects needed for unrestricted editing.

What the PES format is

PES is the embroidery format commonly used by Brother and Baby Lock machines and supported by software such as PE-Design, Palette, Embird, Hatch, and other embroidery applications. It stores stitch data along with thread, color, hoop, design, and machine-related metadata.

The main benefit is compatibility with equipment that specifically accepts .pes. PES version, hoop size, maximum design dimensions, and stitch-count limits vary by machine; an older model may require an older PES version or a design within a smaller sewing field.

How to convert VP3 to PES

4. Download the resulting file, such as design.pes.
5. Open the PES file in the target machine's software. Check the preview, hoop, dimensions, stitch count, color sequence, jumps, and trims before transferring it to the machine.

Using desktop embroidery software

Use embroidery software that can read VP3 and write PES. In Embird, Hatch, Wilcom, or another compatible application, open the file through File → Open, select the intended hoop and machine settings, then use File → Save As or File → Export and choose PES.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion transfers stitch instructions and translates format-specific metadata; it does not recreate the original digitized artwork. Stitch placement is usually retained, but thread-brand assignments, color names, thumbnails, trims, and jump handling may change. Inspect the converted file in simulation rather than relying only on its file extension.

Do not substantially resize the design without recalculating stitches. Enlargement can leave sparse coverage, while reduction can create excessive density, thread breaks, puckering, or needle damage. For production, test the PES file on a fabric sample with the intended hoop, stabilizer, needle, and thread, and confirm that the machine recognizes both the PES version and the design size.
