A machine-embroidery machine or editor such as Brother PE-Design requires a PES file, while WEBP images usually come from websites, phones, or graphic software. Because WEBP stores pixels and PES stores stitch instructions, this conversion requires digitizing the image rather than simply changing its extension.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; browsers, websites, smartphones, and graphics programs commonly create or save it.

A WEBP file describes colored pixels, not embroidery objects. It may contain gradients, photographic detail, anti-aliased edges, or transparency that an embroidery machine cannot reproduce directly.

What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery design format used primarily by Brother and compatible embroidery machines. A PES file contains stitch coordinates, thread-color information, object order, trims, jumps, and design metadata.

PES is suitable for editing in embroidery software and transferring designs to a machine through supported storage media or a direct connection. Its output depends on stitch density, underlay, stitch direction, thread type, hoop size, and fabric—not only on the source image.

How to convert WEBP to PES

Recommended desktop workflow with Ink/Stitch

1. Open the WEBP in an image editor and simplify it before digitizing. Remove the background, reduce the number of colors, eliminate tiny details, and save a clean copy such as design.png. Inkscape versions with WebP support can sometimes import the original directly; PNG is a more predictable intermediate format.
2. Install Inkscape and the Ink/Stitch extension. Import the image with File → Import. Use the image only as a visual template; it is not yet embroidery data.
3. Trace each intended area as a separate vector object. Use closed shapes for fills, paths for running stitches, and separate objects for outlines. Set the embroidery parameters for each object, including stitch type, spacing, stitch length, angle, underlay, and pull compensation.
4. Arrange objects in sewing order, normally from background areas to foreground details. Add manual trims or jumps where thread connections should not sew across visible parts of the design.
5. Set the hoop, design dimensions, thread chart, and machine settings in Ink/Stitch. Use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Params to preview stitch count, thread changes, jumps, and estimated size.
6. Export through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, select PES as the machine format, and save the result as design.pes. Open the exported file in the target embroidery software before transferring it to the machine.

Commercial digitizing software

Hatch Embroidery, Embird, and Brother PE-Design can import a raster reference, create embroidery objects, and export PES. Their automatic image-to-embroidery tools can provide a starting point, but manual cleanup is normally required for stitch direction, overlaps, density, small lettering, and thread changes.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Do not rename design.webp to design.pes; the internal data remains a raster image and embroidery software will reject it. Converting WEBP to SVG alone also does not create stitches—SVG supplies vector shapes, which must still receive embroidery parameters.

Small details usually need enlargement or removal. Text often requires an embroidery-specific font, minimum letter height, and manual stitch planning. Gradients and photographic shading must be replaced with fill layers, thread-color changes, or controlled pattern fills.

Check the machine's supported PES version, maximum hoop dimensions, thread-color format, stitch-count limit, and acceptable storage method. Preview the design at actual size and sew a test sample on similar fabric; excessive density can cause puckering, while insufficient density can leave gaps.
