How to convert webp to jpg file

A submission form, older editor, or printing workflow may accept JPG but reject WEBP files. Converting creates a compatible copy for editing, sharing, printing, or archiving while leaving the original unchanged.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, and it often produces smaller files than JPG at similar visual quality.

Websites, content-delivery networks, content-management systems, browsers, Android applications, and modern image editors use WEBP to reduce download size. A browser may save an image as WEBP when a website serves that format, even if the source image was originally stored in another format. Current versions of applications such as Photoshop and GIMP can open WEBP, although older software may not.

What the JPG format is

JPG and JPEG are the same format; .jpg and .jpeg are different filename extensions for it. JPG is a raster format designed mainly for photographs and other continuous-tone images. It is supported by most operating systems, office applications, image editors, social platforms, printers, cameras, and older software.

JPG uses lossy compression and cannot store transparency or animation. Its main advantage is broad compatibility, not smaller files: a JPG made from the same image may be larger than the original WEBP at comparable quality.

How to convert the image

Convert on 101convert.com

  1. Open the WEBP-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or drag the .webp file into the upload area.
  3. Start the conversion and choose JPG if the tool presents an output-format option.
  4. Download the resulting .jpg file and verify its dimensions, colors, and background.

This option runs without installing software and is free to use. Do not upload confidential images unless the service's privacy and file-retention terms are suitable for them.

Convert with desktop software

In GIMP, open the WEBP file, choose File → Export As…, enter a filename ending in .jpg, and set the JPEG quality in the export dialog. In Photoshop, open the file and use File → Save a Copy… or the available JPEG export command, then choose JPEG and set its quality. Menu names vary by application version.

Convert with ImageMagick

ImageMagick performs local conversions and batch processing. After installing it, run:

magick input.webp output.jpg

To choose a high JPEG quality, use:

magick input.webp -quality 92 output.jpg

Replace the filenames with the actual paths. The command retains the source pixel dimensions unless a resize operation is added. The quality value controls JPEG encoding, not the recovery of detail already lost in the WEBP.

For a transparent WEBP, select a replacement background because JPG has no alpha channel:

magick input.webp -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -quality 92 output.jpg

Change white to another background color when appropriate. To convert only the first frame of an animated WEBP, use:

magick "input.webp[0]" output.jpg

A JPG output is a single still image; exporting an animation requires a separate image for each frame or a different animated output format.

Quality and compatibility limits

If the WEBP already uses lossy compression, converting it to JPG applies another lossy encoding step. Fine detail, text edges, and sharp boundaries may degrade slightly. A JPEG quality setting around 90–95 is usually a practical balance; quality 100 increases file size without guaranteeing lossless results.

Keep the original WEBP and convert it once rather than repeatedly opening and saving the JPG. JPG artifacts are especially visible in screenshots, logos, line art, and images containing small text; PNG or lossless WEBP is better for those sources when the receiving application supports it.

Transparency must be checked after conversion because transparent areas become the selected background color. Animation must also be checked because ordinary JPG output retains only one frame. Color profiles, metadata, and EXIF orientation can vary between tools; avoid using ImageMagick's -strip option unless removing metadata is intentional, because it can also remove color-profile information.
