How to convert heif to jpg file

iPhone, iPad, and some Android photos may use .heic or .heif, while a website upload form, older Windows program, printer workflow, or recipient may require .jpg. Conversion creates a compatible copy for those uses while preserving the original file as the camera master.

What HEIF files are

HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File Format, an image container format based on the ISO Base Media File Format. Apple commonly stores HEIF photos as .heic files using HEVC compression; the same container can also hold other image codecs and additional image data.

HEIF can store a still image, metadata, color profiles, depth information, transparency, image sequences, and editing-related data. It generally provides smaller files or better image quality than JPEG at a comparable file size, but application support is less universal. Recent Apple operating systems open HEIC files natively; Windows may need Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions, and some HEVC-based files may also require HEVC codec support.

What JPG files are

JPG is the common filename extension for JPEG, a lossy image format supported by browsers, email clients, printers, upload forms, and almost all photo software. It is a practical delivery format when a service does not recognize HEIF.

JPEG quality can be selected during export: higher settings retain more detail but create larger files. Standard JPG does not support transparency, HDR image data, image sequences, depth maps, or Live Photo motion, so it cannot fully reproduce every feature stored in a HEIF file.

Convert a HEIF file to JPG

To convert without installing software, upload the .heic or .heif file to the converter on 101convert.com, select JPG as the output format, run the conversion, and download the .jpg result. The service can be used free of charge.

On macOS, open the image in Preview and choose File → Export. Select JPEG in the Format menu, set the Quality slider, select a destination, and save. In Photos, select images and use File → Export → Export [number] Photos, then select JPEG.

On Windows, install Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions if the image will not open. Open the file in Photos or Paint, then use Save as → JPEG picture or Save as → JPEG image; menu labels vary by application and Windows version.

For repeatable batch conversion, ImageMagick can convert files when it was installed with HEIF support, usually through libheif:

magick input.heic -quality 92 output.jpg

On macOS or Linux, this shell loop converts lowercase .heic filenames in the current folder:

for f in *.heic; do [ -e "$f" ] || continue; magick "$f" -quality 92 "${f%.heic}.jpg"; done

Run batch commands on copies or write output to a separate folder to avoid overwriting existing JPG files.

Quality and compatibility limits

HEIF-to-JPG conversion is lossy: the source image is decoded and compressed again as JPEG. A quality setting around 90–95 is a reasonable starting point for photos intended for later editing or printing; lower values reduce size but can introduce block artifacts, smearing, and loss of fine detail.

HEIF photos may use 10-bit color, HDR, or wide-gamut color. Most JPG exports are 8-bit SDR, so highlight detail, saturation, and overall HDR appearance can change. Check the converted image in the destination application when color accuracy matters.

A converter normally exports only the primary still image from a multi-image HEIF file or Live Photo. Transparent HEIF images need a solid background in JPG, and the chosen background color depends on the converter.

EXIF metadata such as capture date, orientation, camera settings, and GPS coordinates may not transfer consistently. Verify the output metadata if chronological sorting, automatic rotation, location data, or camera records are required.
